Nexus Uranium Shifts Gears After South Dakota Court Halts Chord Hearing Over Indigenous Language Rights

A federal lawsuit over Lakota interpretation services halts Nexus Uranium's Chord project hearing; the company pivots to Arizona and Wyoming assets while awaiting court resolution.

A procedural clash over Lakota translation services has thrown the permitting timeline for Nexus Uranium’s Chord exploration project into suspended animation. Rather than concluding the long-awaited hearing before the South Dakota Board of Minerals and Environment, the May 18-22 session was interrupted mid-stream by a federal lawsuit seeking an immediate injection — one that demands additional language accommodations before any state-level decision can proceed.

The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for South Dakota, does not attack the technical merits of the exploration plan or question the quality of the project’s geology. Instead, it targets the process itself: the intervenors argue the board failed to provide adequate Lakota-language interpretation services, and they want the hearing paused until that gap is closed. Nexus’s subsidiary appears only as a “real party in interest,” a legal bystander to the fight. No new date for the resumed hearing has been set.

With the Chord permit effectively on ice, the company is leaning harder on its other early-stage uranium assets to maintain forward momentum. The Arizona Strip project in Mohave County, acquired outright in March 2026, comprises 38 BLM mining claims covering seven collapse-breccia-pipe targets — a geological setting that has historically hosted significant uranium deposits in the region. There is no defined mineral resource yet, but management has signaled that field work will begin imminently to keep the development cadence alive.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nexus Uranium?

Further north, Nexus holds the South Pass project in Wyoming, a collection of 151 mineral claims across roughly 3,020 acres in Fremont and Sublette counties. Those claims were originally staked directly in 2023 and later folded into the portfolio via the September 2025 acquisition of Basin Uranium Corp. All necessary permits for an exploration program are already in hand, save for one final requirement: the posting of a reclamation bond with the Bureau of Land Management. Like Arizona, no resource has been delineated at South Pass.

The share price reflects the uncertainty. Nexus stock last changed hands at around €0.48, a drop of roughly 74% from the 52-week high of €1.83 set in January 2026. Year-to-date losses exceed 60%, even as the shares managed a modest uptick over the past seven trading days. The relative strength index sits near 60, while annualized volatility has climbed to almost 89% — a reminder that this remains a high-risk, speculative holding.

Management insists that confidence in the Chord project itself is unshaken. The pivot toward Arizona and Wyoming is described less as a strategic reprioritization and more as a pragmatic response to a regulatory bottleneck — an effort to avoid losing exploration tempo while the courts deliberate over language access. The next tangible catalysts are clear: a resumption of the South Dakota hearing, any update on the federal lawsuit, the posting of the Wyoming reclamation bond, and first boots on the ground in Mohave County. Until one of those milestones lands, Nexus Uranium’s story will be defined by its ability to push multiple pre-resource projects forward simultaneously — all while a courtroom in South Dakota decides how many translators are needed before the drilling can begin.
