The North American commercial vehicle sector is bracing for its most costly technological overhaul in years, driven by stringent new U.S. emissions standards. Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is responding with a comprehensive powertrain initiative for the 2027 model year—a move that may allow it to capitalize on a demand surge triggered by the regulatory change itself.

A Dual-Supplier Strategy for Customer Choice

Central to DTNA's approach is providing fleet operators with unprecedented flexibility. Starting with the 2027 models, customers of Freightliner and Western Star trucks will have a choice between gasoline, diesel, and natural gas engines. All options will be engineered to meet the forthcoming EPA 2027 standards, which mandate a dramatic reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) limits from 0.2 to 0.035 grams per horsepower-hour—a cut of approximately 80% that necessitates significant R&D investment across the industry.

To build this portfolio, DTNA is integrating engines from both its in-house Detroit brand and supplier Cummins. In early March 2026, the company announced it would add three Cummins engines to its lineup: the new B6.7 Octane gasoline engine, the X10, and a revised X15 model. These will complement the proprietary Detroit Gen-6 platform.

A notable technical introduction is the Cummins X10, which replaces two predecessor models (the L9 and X12). It utilizes a 48-volt onboard electrical system to rapidly heat the exhaust after-treatment during cold starts, a critical engineering solution for compliance. Production of the Detroit Gen-6 DD13 and DD15 variants is scheduled to begin in January 2027, with the DD16 following a year later.

Market Dynamics and a Potential Pre-Buy Wave

This product offensive comes at a pivotal moment for DTNA's North American operations. The unit's revenue declined by 29% in 2025, with U.S. import tariffs impacting earnings by approximately €250 million. Pressure is expected to intensify in 2026 following the implementation of 25% tariffs in November.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Daimler Truck?

However, early signs of a rebound are emerging. Order intake increased by 13% in the fourth quarter of 2025. For the full year 2026, Daimler Truck anticipates selling between 330,000 and 360,000 vehicles globally, up from 315,000 units the previous year.

A significant potential catalyst is the so-called "pre-buy" effect. Industry observers estimate that engines compliant with the EPA 2027 rules could cost around $10,000 more. Consequently, many fleet operators are likely to bring forward purchases to avoid this added expense, potentially providing DTNA with a volume boost in late 2026 and into 2027. Orders for the B6.7 Octane gasoline engine opened the week of March 9, with production slated to commence in the third quarter of 2026.

The company's ability to fully leverage this regulatory cycle will ultimately depend on the tariff environment and broader freight market dynamics. Daimler Truck's share price has appreciated roughly 11% since the start of the year, trading notably above its April low but still about 6% below its 52-week high of €44.39, reached in July 2025.
