A shortage of skilled health managers is driving hospitals and pharmaceutical companies to overhaul their recruitment strategies, with over 8,200 vacancies now listed across German job portals. The average annual salary for these roles sits at roughly €50,000.

Fresenius Medical Care is betting on early outreach. On 20 June 2026, the dialysis giant will host an action day in St. Wendel to showcase dual-study tracks in engineering and biopharmaceutical drug production, partnering with htw saar and the Umwelt-Campus Birkenfeld. The event is one piece of a broader push to lure young talent into a field that Bavaria's health minister, Judith Gerlach, warns is at risk of compromising nationwide care. She has called for stronger structural support and greater reliance on AI-powered systems to relieve staff.

The shortage is particularly acute in urban centres such as Düsseldorf, where the density of health-management openings is highest. Hospitals are responding with integrated study models. The Heinrich-Braun-Klinikum (HBK) in Zwickau will launch a dual bachelor's programme in health and social management in October 2026, spanning six semesters of alternating theory and practice. Trainees earn between €800 and €1,400 per month. Across the country, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) together run twelve dual-degree programmes, enrolling roughly 100 new apprentices each year. Admission requires the Hochschulreife — the German university-entrance qualification.

The pipeline from vocational training to higher education is gaining traction. A graduate of Vitos Nordhessen completed her apprenticeship as a health-management clerk with top marks and a shortened schedule; this autumn she will begin a dual bachelor's in health management in Fulda. The Excella GmbH site in Feucht is also recruiting apprentices for the role of Pharmakant (pharmaceutical technician), with starts in September 2026 and the possibility of acceleration for strong candidates.

Despite such opportunities, indecision remains widespread. Only 31.5 percent of school-leavers have a concrete plan after graduation, prompting information fairs to step in. On 11 June 2026, twenty-nine exhibitors will gather at a higher-education fair in Fulda. In the Steinfurt district, the application window for dual-study places in the following year opens in June.

The need for competent management is becoming more technical. St. Vinzenz-Krankenhaus in Düsseldorf expects to perform roughly 2,300 endoprosthetic procedures in 2026 and is investing in robotic surgical systems and digital process optimisation — raising the bar for both managerial and technical expertise among its staff.
