Germany has been in breach of European Union law since June 7, 2026, after the federal government failed to transpose the EU Pay Transparency Directive on time. The delay opens the door for the European Commission to launch infringement proceedings against Berlin.

The directive aims to shrink the gender pay gap, which stood at 15.6 percent in 2024. Family Minister Karin Prien now expects national implementation by early 2027, with the first reporting obligations and individual rights to information for employees not taking effect until June 2028. She has stressed the importance of keeping administrative burdens low for companies.

While the pay-equality timeline unfolds, two recent labor court decisions have sharpened the legal framework for dismissals – with lessons for employers across the country.

The Nordhausen Labor Court upheld the termination of a field-service worker in May 2026 after he lost his driver’s license for a year. Driving was deemed an essential contractual duty, and the company had no option to reassign him. In contrast, the Bochum Labor Court ruled in March that a dismissal for suspected time theft while working from home was invalid. The employer had failed to inform the works council and missed the deadlines for a suspicion-based termination.

Those rulings come as a separate political debate heats up over daily working hours. Michaela Engelmeier of the Social Association Germany spoke out in early June against any relaxation of the eight-hour day, arguing that a potential 13-hour day would be incompatible with employees’ real lives. The coalition agreement between the Union and the SPD already envisions more flexible weekly working time, making this a live issue for employers and workers alike.

On the skills front, local initiatives are targeting labor shortages with new training pathways. The Wetterau district and its job center are promoting subsidized part-time apprenticeships aimed at people with family obligations and recognized refugees, offering around 30 hours per week. Information sessions are set for June 27 in Friedberg and June 30 in Büdingen; the Gießen employment agency follows with an online consultation for companies on August 5.

The SRH Higher Vocational School in Frankfurt is hosting information evenings on June 11 and 25 for its two-year full-time training program to become a state-certified social assistant, which also grants a university of applied sciences entrance qualification. Applicants need language skills at B2 or C1 level.

Adult education is also evolving. The wetterau-based adult education center (vhs) launches courses on learning with artificial intelligence starting July 15; the Groß-Gerau district’s vhs adds AI topics and digital legacy planning. New rhetoric offerings begin in the Wetterau on October 12, while formats such as “Dance Your Way into Leadership” (from August 3) and salary negotiation seminars round out the portfolio.

In Regensburg, Caritas is holding a session on account garnishment on June 17 – designed for multipliers in social institutions and public authorities.

A further regulatory shift is the digital product passport, which from 2027 will set technical standards for batteries, electrical appliances, and textiles. A conference on the topic takes place June 16 at the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, signaling that the ecological transformation of the economy is gaining momentum.
