A new regulatory dossier from the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) is prompting employers across Germany to revisit their fire protection arrangements—just as a key training program for fire safety officers gets a concrete start date.

Under the workplace rule ASR A2.2, at least five percent of on-site employees per shift and location must be trained as fire safety assistants. That quota climbs sharply wherever elevated fire risks exist. In a standard office with 20 workers, one trained assistant suffices mathematically. For a production hall with 150 staff and higher hazard levels, the minimum rises to 15 helpers. Safety experts also advise building in a buffer of 20 to 30 percent for sick leave and vacation cover.

The BAuA’s updated assessment tool helps companies systematically evaluate their risks. It relies on the classic fire triangle model and categorises dangers according to H-statements (hazard phrases), while a specific EMKG module addresses fire and explosion hazards.

The BAuA’s tool shows how methodical fire risk management needs to be — but translating that into everyday documentation can still overwhelm busy teams. A cornerstone of workplace fire protection is the qualification to become a certified fire safety officer (BSB) under DGUV 205-003. The next in-person course runs from 17 to 28 August 2026 in Siek, near Hamburg. It covers 80 teaching units and includes cooperation with local fire brigades. Graduates earn the right to train fire safety assistants within their own organisations. In early June, organisers also introduced concepts for live webinars that deliver the theoretical components.

VR training brings realism without real flames

Immersive technology is gaining traction in fire-safety education. New virtual-reality extinguisher drills simulate heat, smoke smells, and visible flames — allowing realistic scenarios for hospitals, laboratories, or industrial plants without any actual danger. However, classic in-person sessions remain essential. Compact fire-assistant courses with hands-on extinguishing practice are scheduled for late June in the Hamburg region, priced at around 99 euros per participant. Refresher training is recommended every three to five years.

Fire departments invest in simulation houses

Public fire services are also stepping up realistic training. At the end of May, crews from Wolfsgraben drilled apartment blazes in a purpose-built fire house in Tulln, operating under respiratory protection. In Rheine, a new simulation building made of heat-resistant fire concrete went into service — able to withstand temperatures up to 1,400 degrees Celsius.

The push for early recruitment appears to be working. Lower Saxony’s youth and children’s fire brigades reported a 2.5 percent membership increase in 2025, reaching over 54,000 participants. Girls now account for 37 percent of those young firefighters.
