Data presented at the 2026 ASCO annual meeting has pushed GLP-1 therapies far beyond the spotlight of weight loss. Researchers from the Cleveland Clinic reported that patients taking these drugs saw their risk of metastasis in lung and breast cancer drop by 38 to 50 percent. The study tracked more than 12,000 individuals, and the findings have added a sharp new dimension to the ongoing race to develop and approve related treatments.

That race is now playing out across multiple fronts. On June 6, 2026, the same day the Cleveland Clinic data surfaced, Eli Lilly announced that its latest obesity drug significantly alleviates sleep apnea. Meanwhile, Roche rolled out Phase II results showing a 22.7 percent weight reduction in trial participants. Novo Nordisk is also pushing forward: its drug Zenagamtide led to up to 14.6 percent weight loss among Type 2 diabetes patients, with a notable drop in HbA1c levels. Phase III studies for that compound are slated for the second half of 2026.

Oral formulations have become a key battleground. The European Medicines Agency has recommended approval of Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy tablet for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or for those who are overweight with related conditions. Clinical trial participants on the pill lost 13.61 percent of their body weight, compared to just 2.18 percent in the control group. A final decision from the European Commission is expected by the end of July 2026. The tablet is already approved in the United Arab Emirates, with the UK set to follow shortly. In parallel, Eli Lilly’s oral GLP-1 agonist orforglipron earned US approval in April 2026 — the first in its class to require no specific food restrictions. A European green light is anticipated in early 2027.

Beyond obesity and oncology, researchers are exploring alternative paths to treating sleep apnea. A team at Flinders University studied low-dose quetiapine and found it reduces apnea episodes and improves sleep quality. But they cautioned against routine prescription, warning that the drug significantly impairs reaction time and driving ability the following day.

New clinical guidelines now recommend GLP-1 receptor agonists for adolescents with obesity, as a complement to lifestyle interventions. An application to extend approval to children as young as six has already been filed.

Yet for all the medical promise, Germany’s position as a hub for pharmaceutical investment appears under pressure. Eli Lilly has halved its planned investment in a new facility in Alzey, from 2.5 billion US dollars to roughly half that amount, and will create fewer than the originally forecast 1,000 jobs. Boehringer Ingelheim has likewise scrapped planned investments worth 900 million euros at German sites. Both companies cited the country’s health policy framework and federal government cost-cutting measures in statutory health insurance as reasons. High-priced innovations, they argue, are facing ever more headwinds in Germany.
