BYD Brings LiDAR to the Masses Even as Margins Shrink at Home

BYD launches Seagull with LiDAR and 505km range at €8,200, but Q1 profit plunges 55% amid China price war; exports surge 60% as fleet deals and geopolitical talks loom.

When BYD starts selling the 2026 Seagull on 11 May, the Chinese electric-vehicle maker will hand a dachmontierten LiDAR sensor to drivers of a city car that costs less than €8,200. At roughly 65,000 yuan, the entry-level model of the updated Seagull packs hardware previously reserved for premium sedans. It is the first vehicle in its A00-class micro-EV segment to carry such a sensor, which powers the "God's Eye B" (DiPilot 300) driving-assistance platform. The range jumps to 505 kilometres from the predecessor's 405 km, and output has been raised to 60 kW. Four trim levels are planned, with the top version reaching 80,000 yuan.

Yet the technological leap comes against the backdrop of a brutal squeeze at home. In the first quarter of 2026, net profit collapsed 55.4% to 4.09 billion renminbi — a stark reminder of how deeply the price war that has gripped China's auto market is cutting into margins. April sales of passenger cars in China fell 15.7% year on year to 314,100 units, the eighth consecutive monthly decline. The Hong Kong-listed stock closed Friday at HK$99.75, down nearly 1%.

To offset the domestic chill, BYD is leaning heavily on fleet deals and exports. Over the weekend it signed a framework agreement with Car Inc, the country's largest directly operated rental-car company, for 100,000 electric vehicles. The deal also covers the installation of BYD's "Flash Charging" fast-charging points at rental locations across the country. The company already operates 5,924 such stations in 311 cities, and its app has surpassed one million downloads, processing more than 21 million kilowatt-hours in the past two months. The broader target — 20,000 stations by the end of 2025 — remains ambitious given the current pace of expansion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BYD?

Overseas, the story is markedly brighter. From January to April, export deliveries hit roughly 456,000 units, an increase of nearly 60% over the same period last year. The annual target stands at 1.5 million vehicles. In the United Kingdom, BYD confirmed on 5 May that it is the best-selling pure-electric car brand of 2026 so far, having delivered more than 12,700 vehicles. Australia and New Zealand also provided a boost: the ANCAP safety programme awarded the BYD Seal 6 five stars, with 92% for adult occupant protection — the highest score in the current test round.

The successful Great Tang flagship SUV, which racked up more than 100,000 pre-orders within two weeks of its unveiling at the Beijing Auto Show, further underscores the strength of BYD's product portfolio. Yet the persistent domestic weakness keeps the pressure on.

Geopolitical currents add another layer of uncertainty. US President Donald Trump is due in Beijing on 14 May for a two-day summit with Xi Jinping. Trade imbalances and the potential for Chinese automakers to gain access to the North American market are on the agenda. Canada has already moved: under certain quotas, Chinese EVs now face a reduced tariff of 6.1%. Whether the summit yields concrete benefits for BYD remains to be seen, but the company has made clear it will not sacrifice its technological edge in the price war at home — while continuing to accelerate abroad. The annual general meeting in early June may offer more detail on capital needs and further expansion plans.
