The week that kicked off the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s annual meeting in Chicago may prove decisive for BioNTech, as the German biotech juggles a fresh vote of confidence from UBS with the promise of make-or-break oncology data. The stock, hovering near €81 on Friday, has been drifting roughly 20% below its yearly peak of €101.90, and market participants are looking for a catalyst to break the stalemate.

UBS analysts upgraded BioNTech to "Buy" on Monday, citing diminishing risk in the company’s next-generation cancer drug pipeline. The Swiss bank’s attention centers on Pumitamig, the lead candidate in BioNTech’s oncology arsenal. This bispecific antibody combines immune activation with disruption of tumor blood supply, and early safety and efficacy data from lung cancer studies — both global and Chinese — have been encouraging. UBS believes Pumitamig could become competitive in hard-to-treat indications such as triple-negative breast cancer and colorectal cancer. The upcoming readout of overall survival data from the HARMONi-6 study, conducted with partners Akeso and Summit Therapeutics, could shift how the market views the entire oncology strategy.

BioNTech is working to shed its identity as a pure-play vaccine developer, building a pipeline that now includes mRNA-based therapies, bispecific antibodies, and antibody-drug conjugates. The shift comes as pandemic-era vaccine revenues naturally recede. Yet the COVID-19 franchise continues to provide a stable foundation. A study published on May 28 in Nature Communications confirmed the sustained efficacy of the BioNTech-Pfizer shot BNT162b2 across various clinical settings, showing early and robust protection. And an FDA advisory panel has already recommended the vaccine composition for the 2026/2027 season, giving regulatory clarity for autumn campaigns.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BioNTech?

The ASCO meeting represents the main stage for BioNTech to demonstrate that its mRNA expertise translates beyond infectious disease. Investors are waiting for updates on several programs targeting solid tumors, with the company having advanced multiple candidates toward registration-enabling trials. A successful data readout could provide the proof that BioNTech's R&D engine can produce a commercial oncology portfolio independent of its pandemic legacy.

On the technical side, the stock sits on a knife's edge. At roughly €81, it matches the 50-day moving average but remains well below the 200-day average of about €86. The March low of €72.50 has held for now, but a sustained uptrend has yet to materialize. The current price of €80.90 — about 21% below the year’s high and down roughly 2% year-to-date — leaves the share vulnerable, though the 30-day annualized volatility of just over 30% suggests room for sharp moves in either direction.

The combination of an analyst upgrade and data catalysts from ASCO could provide the twin thrust BioNTech needs to re-rate. UBS sees the risk around the oncology pipeline decreasing, while the market waits for clinical results that could either validate or undermine the company’s transformation. The next few days in Chicago will go a long way toward determining which narrative prevails.
