The Berlin Senate administration is hunting for a new head of its in-house occupational safety division, one of the most senior public-sector roles in a nationwide push for talent. The successful candidate will oversee strategic inspections tied to the Joint German Occupational Safety and Health Strategy (GDA) and manage work-accident casework. The vacancy underlines a broader trend: Germany currently lists 1,359 unfilled positions for specialists in workplace safety and health protection, spanning industry, healthcare and specialized service providers.

Economic powerhouses like Stuttgart, the Ludwigsburg district and the Upper Palatinate region show a concentrated need. In Ludwigsburg, employers including Siemens, the Robert Bosch Hospital, and service firms ias health & safety and BG prevent are scouting for personnel. The Upper Palatinate reports dozens of vacancies too, with construction company Max Bögl, the Max Planck Society and staffing agencies seeking experts for hazard assessments, accident prevention and audits. Candidates can expect to handle tasks such as ensuring corporate compliance and strategically avoiding incidents.

Compensation varies by experience and responsibility. Specialized providers like Ferchau and Partslife offer annual salaries between €40,000 and €80,000. Meanwhile the public sector competes for senior leaders—the Berlin post carries significant responsibility, including oversight of the capital's response to occupational accidents.

A regulatory shift took effect in January 2026 in North Rhine-Westphalia, where new calculation bases for continued wage payment (Entgeltfortzahlung) came into force. Employers in that state can now claim surcharge rates of roughly 58.98 percent for supplementary labor costs.

In the construction industry, the German Construction Contract Procedures (VOB) marked its 100th anniversary in May. The Central Association of the German Construction Industry called the rulebook a cornerstone of the sector. German building associations are also active internationally: a project running until 2027 supports trade federations in Georgia with consultancy and training on construction safety.

To tackle the ongoing shortage, institutions are investing in internal training and trade fair appearances. The University of Oldenburg, through its occupational safety office, offers qualifications for fire protection assistants. Regional job fairs serve as recruiting platforms: in early June, companies such as BASF Polyurethanes and local clinics in Gießen and Diepholz courted junior staff. University towns like Kaiserslautern are using corporate-contact fairs to connect engineering graduates early with employers in operational safety.
