Geopolitical sparks and a fresh wave of analyst optimism sent BAE Systems shares sharply higher on Wednesday, with the London-listed stock climbing 2.72 percent to 2,019 GBX. The move was amplified by reports of US airstrikes on drone sites in Iran, which lifted defense stocks across the FTSE 100. BAE’s US-traded American depositary receipts now sit at $109.33, having gained roughly 13.5 percent since the start of the year — still about 20 percent below the recent highs that have attracted value-seeking investors.

That gap has not gone unnoticed on the sell side. On May 28, Mediobanca upgraded BAE to “Outperform,” reflecting growing confidence in the company’s valuation and market position. Morgan Stanley followed up the next day, flagging that European defense equities look “cheap” after the latest selloff and pointing to a price-to-earnings multiple of around 20 as an appealing entry point given the structural demand tailwinds. The analyst consensus now stands at 18 “Outperform” ratings, with an average price target of 23.22 GBP — roughly 15 percent above Wednesday’s close.

Adding to the bullish narrative, BAE announced a $135 million investment in its North American footprint. The bulk — $85 million — will modernise the company’s site in Hudson, New Hampshire, with a further $50 million earmarked for expanding manufacturing in Austin, Texas. Both projects centre on electronic systems and precision munitions, reinforcing BAE’s role in the US defence industrial base while creating specialised jobs in the two states.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying BAE Systems?

The spending firepower comes courtesy of a rapidly growing top line. Revenue has climbed from £25.2 billion in 2023 to £28.3 billion in 2024 and reached £30.6 billion last year. Management’s guidance for 2026 points to a further 7 to 9 percent increase in sales, with adjusted earnings per share expected to rise 9 to 11 percent. Free cash flow should exceed £1.3 billion, providing liquidity for both shareholder returns and next-generation development programmes in space systems, electronic warfare and advanced fighter aircraft.

Shareholders will see the benefit of that cash generation directly next month. The final dividend for fiscal 2025 stands at 22.8 pence per share, with the ex-date in April and payment due in June. Combined with the interim payout, the full-year distribution totals 36.3 pence — a 10 percent increase year-on-year. The payout ratio hovers around 50 percent, in line with the long-term median and underpinned by solid earnings coverage. At the same time, BAE’s £1.5 billion three-year share buyback programme, launched in July 2024, is 62 percent complete, with £930 million deployed so far. The second tranche runs through June 2026, executed weekly by Morgan Stanley.

Underpinning both the dividend commitment and the buyback is a record order book of £83.6 billion, which provides multi-year production visibility. That backlog also supports BAE’s push into artificial intelligence. Late last month the company published a strategic blueprint focused on the ethical deployment of generative AI and agentic systems, including the ability to control entire swarms of autonomous platforms rather than individual drones. BAE is integrating AI-powered optimisation and digital twins into its factories, aiming to streamline manufacturing and bolster resilience across its global technology platform. A separate partnership with Scale AI supplies AI capabilities to the US Department of Defense, further cementing the company’s foothold in the fast-growing market for technology-driven defence solutions.
