VIENNA – A state-owned railway giant, a university that ties wellness to environmentalism, and a two-person hair salon in Lower Austria are among the winners of the 2026 BGF Prize, Austria’s highest government honour for workplace health promotion.

The awards, distributed over two days this week, underscore that effective health management is not reserved for big corporate players. Health Minister Korinna Schumann, who presided over the ceremonies, said that professional health promotion not only boosts employee satisfaction but also raises productivity and cuts absenteeism.

In the small-and-medium-sized enterprise (SME) category, the jury singled out Salon Madiva in Lower Austria. The prize was conferred by the Austrian Network for Workplace Health Promotion (BGF) together with the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) and the Healthy Austria Fund (FGÖ).

ÖBB: Data-Driven Health Management Since 2007

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) received its BGF Prize on Friday. The company has embedded strategic health management into its corporate structure since 2007, serving more than 48,000 employees. Its approach relies on a data-based system that uses a “workability index” to track workforce wellbeing.

Gabriel Kroisleitner, head of ÖBB’s occupational health management, stressed the importance of continuous impact measurement. Despite growing work intensity, he said, the index shows the workforce remains in stable condition. A recent focus has been on mental health.

The results speak for themselves: both the number of sick days and the number of illness-related early retirements have declined.

“Green BGF” Innovation at BOKU

On Thursday, Minister Schumann presented a new category – “Green BGF” – to the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU). The institution pursues a holistic model that directly links health promotion with ecological responsibility.

Its measures include climate-friendly mobility programmes under the banner “Mobility for Health”, sustainable catering initiatives and the creation of green workspaces. Internal evaluations report high employee satisfaction, as well as documented behavioural shifts toward healthier and more eco-friendly lifestyles.

LINZ AG Nears Perfection in Safety Audit

Safety at work also earned recognition. The LINZ AG and its subsidiary LINZ NETZ GmbH received the AUVA seal for safe and healthy working at a ceremony in Vienna on Thursday. In a comprehensive audit, the utility company achieved 99 out of a possible 100 points. The award covers roughly 3,500 workers across more than 100 professions and remains valid for three years.

Alongside the national awards, industry meetings have shifted the spotlight to the future of work. Earlier this month, the 15th Symposium for Occupational Health Management in Saarbrücken explored trends including artificial intelligence in the workplace and support for employees with caregiving responsibilities. Participants discussed how to make health management effective even under tight resource constraints.
