Aixtron’s latest delivery to Japan underscores the growing momentum behind its gallium-nitride technology. The Herzogenrath-based equipment maker has supplied multiple Planetary G5+C systems to Renesas, which already has the tools running in mass production of GaN power devices. Renesas has been aggressively scaling its GaN capabilities since acquiring Transphorm in June last year, targeting applications in electric vehicles, AI data centres and charging infrastructure.

The GaN segment still represents a sliver of Aixtron’s business — just 3% of equipment revenue in the first quarter. Optoelectronics, by contrast, accounted for roughly 70% of incoming orders. But management expects GaN to contribute more meaningfully as customer utilisation rates improve later in the year. For the second quarter, Aixtron has guided for revenue to roughly double to €110 million.

Alongside the operational push, Aixtron has bolstered its financial flexibility. In mid-April it placed €450 million in unsecured convertible bonds, a move that allowed the company to scrap a planned vote on new capital authorisation at the upcoming annual general meeting on 13 May. The proceeds are earmarked for organic growth, potential acquisitions or share buybacks. The company is also expanding its global footprint: a new manufacturing facility in Penang, Malaysia, is slated to begin assembling selected systems for the Asian market from 2027.

The first-quarter numbers themselves painted a mixed picture. Revenue fell to €59.4 million, a 47% drop year on year but within the company’s own forecast. Free cash flow, however, surged to €48.5 million from €29.8 million a year earlier, driven by a sharp reduction in working capital. Order intake climbed 30% to roughly €171 million, signalling that demand — particularly for optoelectronics tooling — remains robust.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

That order pipeline has fuelled a stunning share-price rally. Aixtron’s stock is up about 156% since the start of the year and closed on Friday at €50.10, just shy of its 52-week high of €50.96. The twelve-month gain has been even more dramatic, more than quadrupling the value of the shares.

Ratings agency Berenberg has responded by pulling back. Analyst Gustav Froberg downgraded the stock from Buy to Hold, while raising the price target to €42. The rationale: the rally has already priced in the tight supply dynamics in optoelectronics and the AI-driven excitement around key materials such as indium phosphide. At a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 43 for 2027, Berenberg sees limited upside potential from current levels.

The broader analyst community is split. Jefferies and JPMorgan remain more bullish, each maintaining a €55 target. On the more cautious side, DZ Bank has a Hold rating at €45, Deutsche Bank a Hold at €43, UBS a Neutral at €50, and Barclays an Equal Weight at €39. The consensus average fair value currently sits just above €43.

Aixtron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Aixtron’s second-quarter results, due in July, will be the next major test. With a strong order book and a freshly funded balance sheet, the company has the pieces in place for growth. But with the stock already trading at a steep premium to its historical valuation, there is little room for disappointment. At Wednesday’s AGM, management will have the chance to reinforce its margin ambitions for 2026 in front of shareholders.
