Adidas Stock Breaks Technical Barrier as Deichmann Launch and Legal Catalyst Converge

29.05.2026 - 05:43:00 | boerse-global.de

Adidas shares rally over 12% in a week, breaking above 200-day moving average, fueled by mass-market World Cup collection, strong Q1 earnings, and potential €300M tariff refund.

A capsule collection with Deichmann rolling out across more than 4,600 stores worldwide has positioned Adidas squarely in the mass-market sweet spot just two weeks before the World Cup kicks off. The 24-model lineup — sneakers, slides and accessories priced from just under €12 to a maximum of €85 — is designed to capture volume at a moment when consumer spending typically shifts toward sportswear. That commercial push coincides with a technical milestone that has chartists scrambling: the stock surged past its 200-day moving average on Tuesday for the first time since March 2025.

The breakout, achieved via an upward gap through the 200-day line at roughly €159, delivered Adidas its strongest single-day gain in the entire DAX on Wednesday, with shares ending Xetra trading more than six percent higher. The momentum carried into Thursday, pushing the stock to €169.95, a 2.66 percent daily advance that brought the seven-day rally to over twelve percent. XTB now identifies €171.20 as the next resistance level; a clean break above that opens the door to €186.40. On the downside, the reclaimed 200-day average and an open gap at €157.50 are seen as potential support zones.

Underpinning the technical surge is a solid operational foundation. First-quarter 2026 revenues hit €6.59 billion, a currency-adjusted increase of 14 percent. Operating profit climbed 16 percent to €705 million, while earnings per share of €2.72 landed roughly six percent above consensus estimates. The operating margin improved to 10.7 percent. Apparel sales jumped 31 percent, direct-to-consumer channels rose 22 percent and e-commerce expanded 25 percent. Double-digit growth was recorded in North America, China, Japan/South Korea and Latin America. One blemish: gross margin slipped from 52.1 to 51.1 percent, which management attributed to currency headwinds and higher US tariffs that outweighed underlying operational improvements.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Adidas?

Three catalysts have converged to drive the recent breakout. On the financing side, Adidas placed a €500 million bond in May while continuing a multibillion-euro share buyback programme funded by the strong cash flow expected for 2026. The third element is the most speculative but also the most attention-grabbing: CEO Bjørn Gulden told the annual general meeting that a Supreme Court ruling against US emergency tariffs could entitle Adidas to a refund of roughly €300 million. Gulden stressed the money hasn't been booked yet, saying only that "there is a very good chance it will happen." The market took the cautious optimism as a positive signal.

The share's recovery from its April low of €130.60 now stands at nearly 30 percent, though at a closing price of €168.15 it still trades about 24 percent below its 52-week high of €219.80. In the sportswear sector, Adidas has fared considerably better than Nike, which is down roughly 30 percent year to date. Puma, by contrast, has surged about 33 percent in 2026. Analyst sentiment remains broadly constructive: Jefferies has a €190 target, Bernstein rates the stock "Outperform" with a €245 target, and the consensus sits near €202 — about 20 percent above current levels.

All eyes turn to July 30, when Adidas reports second-quarter results. The numbers will show whether the World Cup backdrop is measurably accelerating revenue momentum and whether the full-year operating profit target of roughly €2.3 billion remains achievable in an environment still clouded by tariffs and currency pressures.
