The Chinese electronics giant Xiaomi is tightening its grip on foundational technologies. In a decisive move to reduce supplier dependency, the company has unveiled a massive new investment blueprint targeting semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and proprietary software. This strategic shift aims to vertically integrate key hardware components, with an ambitious goal to combine several in-house developments into a single device before the year ends. The implications for the company's medium-term trajectory are now coming into focus.

Capital Markets and Operational Performance

Recent market activity and operational updates provide context for this strategic push. On the capital markets front, Xiaomi has been supporting its share price through a share buyback program. Disclosures to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) reveal the company has repurchased shares worth approximately 100 million Hong Kong dollars.

Despite this, the equity remains under pressure. The stock recently traded at €3.84, reflecting a year-to-date decline of -14.54%. This price sits roughly 26% below its 200-day moving average and hovers just above its 52-week low of €3.62.

Beyond smartphones, Xiaomi's electric vehicle division reported delivering over 108,000 units in its most recent quarterly update, signaling growth in its expanding automotive segment.

A Five-Year, 200-Billion-Yuan Roadmap

Founder Lei Jun has confirmed an extensive capital allocation plan. The corporation is committing 200 billion yuan (approximately $28 billion) over the next five years to advance its capabilities in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and its own operating system. The central aim of this strategy is to gain greater control over core components, thereby deepening vertical integration within its hardware ecosystem.

A notable near-term objective is the integration of proprietary chips, a dedicated operating system, and an in-house AI model into one flagship product within the current calendar year. Furthermore, recent trademark filings suggest Xiaomi may be considering a future entry into the memory (storage) market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

Upcoming Showcase: MWC 2026 and HyperOS 3.1

Attention now turns to Barcelona for a nearer-term catalyst. On 28 February 2026, coinciding with the Mobile World Congress, Xiaomi plans to unveil the international version of its new Xiaomi 17 series.

The event will also spotlight a significant software update: HyperOS 3.1. A key feature of this release is a so-called "iOS Bridge," designed to enhance data transfer and cross-platform connectivity with Apple devices.

The upcoming launch on 28 February will serve as an initial test of how compellingly Xiaomi can position its new device generation and HyperOS 3.1 to a global audience. Simultaneously, the sweeping 200-billion-yuan, five-year plan lays down the strategic foundation for the company's next major technological leap.
