Xiaomi's Hardware Blitz Fails to Halt a Deepening Stock Slide

Xiaomi's share price hits multi-year lows as a strategic smartphone pullback causes a 19% shipment drop, despite launching new gaming phones, laptops, and strong EV orders.

Xiaomi's share price continues to languish near multi-year lows, a stark contrast to the ambitious hardware showcase the company unveiled this week. The stock, currently trading at EUR 3.51, has shed nearly 22% since the start of the year and hovers precariously close to its 52-week low of EUR 3.38. This persistent decline underscores a growing disconnect between the company's product innovation and its financial performance in a challenging global market.

The core of the problem lies in the smartphone sector. Fresh data from IDC reveals a 4.1% contraction in global shipments for the first quarter of 2026, totaling 289.7 million units. Xiaomi was hit harder than most major players. Its shipments plummeted by 19.1% to 33.8 million devices, the steepest decline among the world's top five vendors. While this secured Xiaomi the number three position globally, the dramatic drop has alarmed investors. Analysts point to a strategic shift as a key driver: the company is deliberately clearing out inventory of older, lower-margin models to protect profitability against soaring component costs, particularly for memory chips driven by AI demand.

This strategic retreat from the budget segment has created an opening for rivals. While Samsung and Apple maintained relative stability thanks to their premium portfolios, brands like Honor, Nothing, and Google Pixel recorded double-digit growth through overseas expansion and differentiated AI features. In some emerging markets, end-customer prices for devices have surged by up to 50%, accelerating the decline of the sub-$200 smartphone segment where Xiaomi was once dominant.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Xiaomi?

In response, Xiaomi launched a broad hardware offensive on April 21, aiming to counter the downturn and push into more lucrative categories. The centerpiece was the Redmi K90 Max, a gaming flagship featuring the industry's first integrated active cooling fan with a vertical air intake design. Powered by a 3nm MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset and a 6.83-inch 165Hz display, the device is backed by a massive 8,550 mAh battery supporting 100-watt charging.

The event extended beyond smartphones. Xiaomi also introduced two new tablets and the Redmi Book Pro (2026) laptop series, featuring Intel's new Panther Lake architecture. The laptops boast large batteries—99 Wh for the 16-inch model and 92 Wh for the smaller variant—with claims of up to 37 hours of playback time.

Beyond consumer electronics, Xiaomi is betting big on its automotive division for growth. The updated SU7 electric sedan garnered 15,000 firm orders within just 34 minutes of its launch in March. For the full year 2026, the company is targeting 550,000 vehicle deliveries, a significant increase from over 410,000 the previous year.

Yet, this expansion has failed to impress the market. The stock remains down roughly 30% year-on-year and trades nearly 48% below its 52-week high of EUR 6.69. The tension for shareholders is clear: while Xiaomi's automotive business accelerates and its premium hardware portfolio expands, its equity value continues to erode. The company's margin-focused strategy in smartphones is proving to be a painful but deliberate recalibration, with tomorrow's hardware events now carrying immense weight for investor sentiment. A break below the EUR 3.38 support level could trigger further technical selling, making the fundamental impact of each product launch more critical than ever.
