Investors in Vulcan Energy are bracing for a critical three-week period that will test the company's transition from planning to large-scale construction. The imminent release of its first-quarter financial report on April 29, 2026, serves as the central event, offering the initial detailed look at its finances since securing a massive €2.2 billion funding package last December. This report will be scrutinized for any signs of budget overruns as capital expenditure for the Lionheart lithium project ramps up.

The company's operational focus is firmly on preparing the central lithium plant at the Höchst industrial park. Progress on the ground is advancing, with Vulcan having officially commenced preparatory work at its second drilling site, Trappelberg, in the Südliche Weinstraße district. The actual drilling operations there are scheduled for the second half of 2026. This follows the completion of the first geothermal well at the Schleidberg site and comes after the project received its crucial "LiThermEx" production license in March.

While the construction phase gains tangible momentum, questions persist on the financing front. Management has already indicated that achieving the target of producing 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide annually by 2028 will require additional capital. The prospect of further equity raises and the associated dilution for existing shareholders continues to weigh on the stock's performance. In the previous quarter, Vulcan reported an operating cash outflow of €7.2 million, driven largely by personnel and development costs.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

On the revenue side, Vulcan has fortified its position with a solid base of offtake agreements. Ten-year contracts with partners including Stellantis, LG Corp, Umicore, and Glencore cover approximately 72% of the contractually secured production volume for the project's first decade, often with fixed or minimum price provisions. The Glencore deal alone encompasses up to 44,000 tonnes over eight years.

Corporate governance has also seen strategic reinforcement, closely tied to the project's execution. The appointment of Roberto Gallardo to the board on April 1, 2026, is a direct result of HOCHTIEF's €169 million investment in December, which gave the construction giant a 15.41% stake in Vulcan. Gallardo, who serves as Chief Strategy Officer at HOCHTIEF and President of CIMIC Group, brings significant infrastructure expertise. HOCHTIEF is not just a major shareholder; its subsidiary Sedgman is also the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner for Lionheart, deeply aligning the interests of both companies. The nomination window for board candidates ahead of the Annual General Meeting on May 28 closes on April 15.

Trading around $2.75 on the Frankfurt exchange, Vulcan's shares remain roughly 30% below their 52-week high of $3.98. This places the stock at a significant discount to the Australian sector average on a price-to-book basis. The upcoming quarterly figures will provide the first concrete measure of whether investor confidence in the company's disciplined path to production is warranted.
