Ubisoft's Strategic Pivot: Doubling Down on Core Franchises
23.02.2026 - 09:30:36 | boerse-global.deFacing the consequences of overexpansion, Ubisoft Entertainment is executing a significant strategic shift. Under CEO Yves Guillemot, the video game publisher is now concentrating its resources on its most powerful intellectual properties, notably the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry series. This refocusing comes alongside a radical cost-cutting program and the cancellation of numerous peripheral projects, marking a decisive turn back to the company's historical strengths in an effort to secure an operational turnaround.
A Streamlined Portfolio and Major Cost Reductions
This renewed focus on flagship brands is being paired with deep cuts. Ubisoft has confirmed the termination of several side ventures, including the Web3 blockchain game "Singularity" and a collaborative project known as "League." Guillemot acknowledged that the company initiated too many projects during the pandemic, incorrectly anticipating a level of sustained demand that failed to materialize.
The overarching goal is to achieve cost savings totaling 200 million euros. Management plans to reach this target through a comprehensive reorganization into five agile creative units, project adjustments, and targeted staff reductions.
Internal Reorganization and Workforce Tensions
The restructuring is already impacting personnel. Ubisoft Toronto recently eliminated 40 positions, although development continues on the Splinter Cell remake, which is being built using the Snowdrop engine.
This new direction has generated considerable internal friction. In mid-February, employees in France and Italy staged strikes to protest both the job cuts and new remote work policies. The ultimate success of the strategic pivot is widely seen as dependent on Ubisoft's ability to deliver its ambitious release schedule—particularly the major project "Hexe" slated for 2027—on time and to a high standard of quality.

Blockbuster Franchises at the Forefront
The company's management has verified that multiple major projects within its core franchises are in active development. For the Far Cry series, two titles are currently underway: a classic mainline entry under the codename "Blackbird" and a multiplayer extraction shooter titled "Maverick."
The Assassin’s Creed universe is positioned as the central pillar of the new strategy, especially after the franchise reached a player base exceeding 30 million in 2025. Planned releases include the multiplayer project "Invictus," the aforementioned "Hexe" set for 2027, and a full remake of "Black Flag."
