Two Pivotal Events Set to Reshape the iShares MSCI World ETF

The ETF's near-term path hinges on the Fed's March meeting, while a major 2026 index methodology change looms, set to reshape mega-cap stock weightings.

The iShares MSCI World ETF is approaching two significant structural milestones in 2026 that are expected to influence its trajectory. While the quarterly index rebalancing has just concluded, a critical Federal Reserve meeting is now on the immediate horizon.

The Immediate Catalyst: Federal Reserve Policy

In the near term, the fund's performance is likely to be swayed by the outcome of the Fed's policy meeting scheduled for March 17-18. Given that U.S. equities continue to dominate the portfolio, the short-term direction hinges on whether the central bank opts to cut interest rates or decides to pause in light of recent oil price shocks.

Currently, the ETF is trading approximately five percent below its 52-week high of $192.37, a level last touched in February.

A Shift in Geographic Weighting

The recent rebalancing, effective March 2, resulted in a notable portfolio adjustment. A total of 18 securities were added to the index, while 27 were removed. Within the U.S. segment, deletions significantly outnumbered additions: 15 removals compared to just 8 new inclusions. This marks the first net reduction of the U.S. weighting in the fund in several years.

Despite this reduction, American equities maintain a firm stronghold, still constituting over 70% of the portfolio. Leading holdings remain Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft.

New additions include companies such as AST SpaceMobile, Coherent Corp, and FTAI Aviation—firms positioned to benefit from growing demand for AI infrastructure and satellite communications. The list of removed securities featured the French payment services provider Edenred, among several other European stocks.

A Deliberate Pause Ahead of Major Reform

Market analysts interpret the March rebalancing as intentionally conservative. Index provider MSCI aimed to avoid major market disruptions ahead of a comprehensive methodology overhaul slated for May 2026. This upcoming reform will fundamentally alter the calculation logic for free-float adjustments and rounding rules, potentially leading to significant weight shifts for mega-capitalization stocks. The May update is considered the structurally more consequential event of the year for the index.

Furthermore, a previously discussed rule that would have excluded companies with more than 50% of their total assets in cryptocurrency has been abandoned. This decision averts what could have been substantial passive selling pressure on such holdings.

The confluence of this week's Fed decision and the impending index methodology change in May presents the ETF with two concrete tests. Their outcomes have the potential to durably alter the weighting structure of the MSCI World index.
