While investors in German energy giant RWE are understandably focused on the company's own massive capital expenditure plans, a significant—and accelerating—growth driver often operates in the background. The company's strategic stake in transmission system operator Amprion is delivering increasingly substantial returns, fueled by the structural demands of the energy transition.

A Surge in Grid Investment

Amprion, in which RWE holds a 25.1% interest through a joint venture with Apollo Global Management, is dramatically ramping up its spending. For the current year, the grid operator plans to increase network investments to €7.3 billion, a sharp rise from €5.4 billion the previous year. Its long-term vision involves total investments of €42.1 billion by 2030. This sum is allocated between €25.4 billion for onshore grid expansion and the remainder for offshore wind connection projects.

Key infrastructure projects like the new A-Nord and Ultranet power lines are central to this strategy. Once operational from 2027, these corridors are projected to reduce annual grid congestion costs by approximately €700 million.

Financial Performance and Control

RWE consolidates this stake fully in its group accounts and retains operational control of the joint venture. Apollo's contribution of €3.2 billion for its share is earmarked for reinvestment into the network, according to company statements.

Recent annual results from Amprion underscore the investment's value. Revenue climbed 9% to €6.1 billion, while the adjusted group result after taxes surged by over 72% to €672 million. The transmission operator distributes roughly half of its profits to its owners.

Structural Tailwinds from Renewable Expansion

Amprion's growth trajectory is firmly supported by fundamental shifts in Germany's energy mix. In the first quarter of 2026, wind and solar power already met 53% of the nation's electricity demand—an increase of nearly six percentage points compared to the same period a year earlier. Higher volumes of renewable energy directly translate to greater transport needs across the high-voltage grid, creating a structural revenue uplift for Amprion and its shareholders.

RWE's Parallel Growth Trajectory

Alongside this, RWE is aggressively pursuing its own expansion. The group has outlined net investments of €35 billion for the period from 2026 to 2031. CEO Markus Krebber has set a clear target: to increase the adjusted result per share from the current €2.48 to €4.40 by 2031. This represents an average annual growth rate of 12%.

Divergent Analyst Views and Upcoming Events

Market experts currently hold differing opinions on RWE's equity. JPMorgan features the company on its "Analyst Focus List," citing structurally rising gas and electricity prices as key catalysts. In contrast, Bernstein Research maintains a "Market-Perform" rating with a price target of €57, slightly below the recent share price of €59.18, which marked a new 52-week high.

Investor attention now turns to the virtual Annual General Meeting scheduled for April 30, 2026. Management is expected to provide further details on both its internal investment program and the progress at Amprion. Shortly after, on May 6, RWE will pay its elevated dividend for 2026. The payout has been raised by 10% to €1.32 per share, with an ex-dividend date of May 4.
