Strategy's Bold Bitcoin Bet: Doubling Down Amid Market Turmoil
03.03.2026 - 00:45:17 | boerse-global.deWhile its share price has collapsed in tandem with Bitcoin's decline, the corporate Bitcoin holder Strategy is not retreating. Instead, the company is executing an aggressive accumulation strategy, funded by its shareholders, raising questions about the sustainability of this contrarian play.
A Record-High Bitcoin Hoard
Defying broader market weakness, Strategy announced on Monday the purchase of an additional 3,015 Bitcoin for approximately $204.1 million. This acquisition brings the firm's total holdings to a record 720,737 units of the cryptocurrency. The financing method is particularly notable. Contrary to earlier statements from CEO Phong Le about relying more on preferred share issuance, the bulk of this transaction was paid for through the sale of new common stock. This equity sale netted $237.1 million in fresh capital but carries the potential to dilute existing shareholders.
Navigating an Underwater Position
This persistent buying occurs against a challenging backdrop. Strategy's average purchase price now sits near $76,000 per Bitcoin, while the current market price languishes in the mid-$60,000 range. This significant discrepancy heavily impacts the balance sheet. Under new accounting standards that require holdings to be marked to market, price volatility flows directly through the income statement. The substantial accounting loss reported for the fourth quarter of 2025 continues to dominate headlines and dampen investor sentiment.
Leveraged Exposure and a Dividend Buffer
Operating as a leveraged Bitcoin treasury, the company's structure amplifies price movements in both directions. Through the use of convertible notes and various series of preferred shares—such as the STRC series—the stock acts as a performance multiplier on Bitcoin. Since its peak in November 2024, the share value has plummeted by roughly 75%, currently trading over 70% below its 52-week high.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Strategy?
In an effort to maintain the appeal for preferred share investors, management has raised the dividend for the STRC series for the seventh consecutive time. The annual payout now stands at 11.50%, intended to serve as a cushion against ongoing volatility.
Unwavering Commitment Despite Losses
Portfolio losses have not altered the corporate directive. With a cash reserve of $2.25 billion, Strategy views itself as well-positioned to service dividend payments for years without needing to sell any Bitcoin. The path forward remains clear: the company is cementing its status as the world's largest corporate Bitcoin holder by continuing its accumulation strategy, irrespective of short-term profitability concerns.
