A decommissioned uranium enrichment facility in Ohio is set to become the stage for what may be the most ambitious infrastructure project in U.S. history. Japanese technology conglomerate SoftBank has officially broken ground on the "PORTS Technology Campus," converting a Cold War relic into a massive hub for artificial intelligence development. The scale of the undertaking is unprecedented and is deeply intertwined with international geopolitical agreements.

An Investment of Historic Proportions

The financial commitment behind the Pike County project is staggering. SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son has stated the total investment volume over the next two decades will reach $1.5 trillion. At a Friday event, he characterized the venture as the largest single investment in human history. This initiative is a central component of a broader $550 billion Japanese investment pledge in the United States, which was preceded by U.S. government tariff reductions. The significance was underscored by the presence of three U.S. cabinet secretaries at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Unprecedented Scale in Computing and Energy

The plans for the campus are colossal. It is designed to house a data center with a capacity of 10 gigawatts—a figure exceeding half of the United States' entire current data center capacity. To power this immense operation, SoftBank, through its subsidiary SB Energy, is constructing a dedicated power supply. This includes a $33 billion natural gas power plant, which the U.S. government states will be the largest of its kind in the world.

A consortium of 12 Japanese companies, including Toshiba and Mizuho Bank, alongside nine U.S. firms such as Goldman Sachs, is backing the project. This broad alliance is intended to secure the financial and technological execution of the ambitious timeline.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SoftBank?

Regional Impact and Parallel Initiatives

Beyond the core data center, $4.2 billion is allocated to modernize the local electricity grid. In cooperation with utility provider AEP Ohio, new transmission lines will be built. The partners emphasize that these costs will not lead to higher electricity rates for end consumers. On the contrary, surplus energy from the new power plant park is expected to be fed into the public grid, potentially lowering regional power costs. At its peak, construction is projected to employ approximately 35,000 workers.

Construction for the first phase of the campus begins later this year, with $500 billion in investment capital already secured for this initial step. In a parallel development, SoftBank is advancing the so-called "Stargate" initiative in collaboration with Oracle and OpenAI, aiming to further expand American AI infrastructure beyond the Ohio site.
