SK Hynix Accelerates Chip Production to Power the AI Boom

02.03.2026 - 05:55:35 | boerse-global.de

SK Hynix doubles 1C-DRAM production targets to 200k wafers/month, backed by a $21.5B investment and key partnerships with SK Telecom and Nvidia for AI data centers.

The global race to dominate the market for advanced semiconductors is intensifying, with South Korea's SK Hynix making a series of strategic moves to cement its position. The company is aggressively expanding its output of next-generation memory chips, a push directly tied to soaring demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and high-performance computing. This strategy raises a critical question for investors: is this a simple capacity increase, or a decisive bid to lead the next technological wave?

A Massive Bet on Next-Gen Memory

At the heart of SK Hynix's strategy is a dramatic revision of its production targets. The company has officially doubled its manufacturing goal for 1C-DRAM, now aiming for a monthly output of 170,000 to 200,000 wafers. This decision is a direct response to worldwide demand for high-performance memory, which is increasingly becoming a bottleneck for complex AI workloads.

This expansion is part of a broader industry shift away from legacy technologies. Capacity is being reallocated across the sector; notably, competitor Samsung is halting its 2D-NAND production and converting its Hwaseong Line 12—previously capable of 80,000 to 100,000 wafers per month—into a facility for 1C-DRAM. The overarching trend is clear: the supply chain is pivoting toward high-density 3D-NAND architectures and forthcoming DRAM generations like HBM4.

Long-Term Capital Deployment and Key Partnerships

To ensure its growth is sustainable, SK Hynix is committing substantial long-term capital. The firm has outlined plans for a $21.5 billion investment in a semiconductor cluster in Yongin, which is scheduled for phased development through 2030. This represents more than a single project; it is a multi-year infrastructure bet aligned with the lengthy investment cycles inherent to chip fabrication.

The strategy extends beyond sheer volume to integrated system solutions. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, SK Telecom CEO Jung Jai-hun announced a multi-trillion won investment plan for a comprehensive AI transformation. Within this framework, SK Hynix is collaborating with SK Telecom and Nvidia to develop integrated computing systems for hyperscale data centers. These facilities are projected to require over one gigawatt of power nationwide. The partnership also targets the finalization of 6G standards, with an expected launch around 2029. A focus on specialized "Domain Models," rather than broad foundation models, aims to enhance autonomous network functions.

Market Context: Record Activity Amid Valuation Concerns

These developments coincide with a period of exceptional activity in South Korean equity markets. Data shows deposits from private investors climbed to 119.48 trillion won by February 26, marking a 37% increase in just two months. Furthermore, the country reported a record $66.4 billion in exports for February 2026.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Despite these robust macroeconomic indicators, institutional analysts are sounding notes of caution regarding stock valuations. A Bank of America analysis points to signs of overheating in the KOSPI index, drawing parallels to previous technology rallies and the gold market's performance earlier in the year. Within this context, SK Hynix's long-term performance was highlighted: the analysis notes the stock's value has quintupled over the past decade. Concurrently, capital flows show some headwinds; foreign investors were net sellers on February 23, divesting 1.113 trillion won worth of South Korean shares.

On a price level, the equity has seen significant momentum, gaining 47.71% since the start of the year (Friday's closing price: 1,000,000 KRW). This sharp appreciation underscores why valuation discussions are currently prominent across the market.

The key milestones to watch will be whether the planned capacity expansion to 170,000 to 200,000 wafers per month is delivered operationally, and if the research partnerships focused on AI data centers and 6G by 2029 translate into tangible, measurable projects.
