Shell's Dual-Pronged Approach to Shareholder Returns

Investors in energy giant Shell are currently benefiting from a two-part capital return strategy. As the company prepares to distribute its next regular dividend payment, a substantial share buyback program is simultaneously providing significant support to the share price.

Share Repurchases Enhance Value

Running parallel to its dividend policy, Shell's management is actively reducing the number of shares in circulation. The company has been acquiring its own stock daily across various European trading venues this week, with the intention of cancelling these repurchased shares. Investment bank Morgan Stanley is executing these transactions, which are scheduled to continue until May 1, 2026. This systematic reduction in the outstanding share count means future corporate earnings will be distributed among a smaller base, effectively increasing the value attributable to each remaining share.

This shareholder-friendly capital allocation is reflected in recent market performance. Closing at €40.05 in the latest session, the stock trades just marginally below the 52-week high it achieved last week. Since the start of the year, Shell shares have recorded a solid gain of approximately 24.5 percent.

Upcoming Dividend Payment

Eligible shareholders are set to receive the interim dividend for the fourth quarter of 2025 on March 30. The payout is set at $0.372 per share, which converts officially to exactly €0.3227. To qualify for this payment, investors must have been registered as shareholders by February 20.

Following the completion of the current buyback initiative in early May, attention will quickly turn to upcoming corporate events. Market participants may wish to note the following spring dates:
