Wall Street’s view of ServiceNow has fractured. On April 16, a coordinated wave of analyst downgrades swept over the software giant, with firms including Citi, Mizuho, Robert W. Baird, TD Cowen, and Deutsche Bank all cutting their price targets. Yet, in a telling divergence, every single one maintained a buy or outperform rating on the stock. This split captures the central tension: deep near-term skepticism clashing with long-term structural conviction.

The cuts were significant. Citi lowered its target to $177 from $237, while Mizuho reduced its to $150. Robert W. Baird made a more aggressive move, slashing its target to $125 from $175. TD Cowen set a $140 target, and Deutsche Bank cut to $135. Despite the reductions, the average target still implies roughly 38% upside from recent levels. The market’s initial reaction was muted, with shares recovering slightly to around $96 after a brutal year-to-date decline of 46%.

Behind the valuation reset lies a fundamental industry worry. Analysts are questioning whether the very AI efficiency ServiceNow is selling could backfire by reducing the number of software licenses customers need, potentially shrinking the user base. Concurrently, the sector is grappling with compressed valuation multiples, adding pressure on the stock.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ServiceNow?

ServiceNow’s response is a radical strategic pivot. The company is moving beyond isolated AI add-ons and is instead embedding generative artificial intelligence directly into its entire product portfolio. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate external tools into the platform. To support this expansion and meet stringent data residency requirements, ServiceNow has bolstered its physical infrastructure with new data centers in Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, strengthening its foothold in Latin America.

Financially, management’s confidence appears unshaken. The firm is holding firm to its 2026 subscription revenue target of approximately $15.5 billion, which implies a growth rate of nearly 20%. It also aims for an operating margin of 32%. The platform recently generated a free cash flow of $4.6 billion, and in January, the board authorized an additional $5 billion for share repurchases. Industry channels report customers are increasingly adopting its AI offerings.

However, a significant near-term headwind is emerging from the public sector. A partial government shutdown in the U.S. has delayed new contracts, compounded by tough year-ago comparisons. This weakness is pressuring the company’s remaining performance obligations, with sales channel conversations pointing to fewer large public sector deals in the pipeline.

All eyes are now on a pivotal two-week period. On April 22, ServiceNow will report its first-quarter results after the market closes. The options market is pricing in a substantial move of around 11% for the following day. Then, on May 4, the company will host its Financial Analyst Day in Las Vegas, where executives are expected to provide detailed financial updates and showcase new AI capabilities, aiming to bridge the gap between Wall Street's doubts and the firm's ambitious roadmap.
