Semiconductor Stocks Slide as Nvidia's Results Spark Sector-Wide Selloff
28.02.2026 - 00:34:38 | boerse-global.de
A wave of selling pressure hit semiconductor equities on Wednesday, with Broadcom shares caught in the downdraft. The catalyst was an unexpected decline in Nvidia, the artificial intelligence chip leader, despite the company reporting robust quarterly figures and providing an optimistic forecast. Nvidia's stock dropped over 5%, triggering instability across the entire chipmaking sector.
Market Indices Feel the Pressure
Losses within the chip sector radiated outward, impacting major market benchmarks. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite retreated by 1.2%, while the S&P 500 shed 0.5%, falling 37 points to 6,909. The Dow Jones Industrial Average proved an exception, managing to resist the tech-led decline and edging up 17 points to 49,499.
Concurrently, economic data indicated a slight softening in the labor market. Initial jobless claims for the week rose to 212,000, up from a revised 208,000 in the prior period. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note held at 4.0%.
Industry-Wide Weakness Takes Hold
Nvidia’s weakness rapidly spread to its peers. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) declined 3.4% over the same period, and Broadcom was similarly pulled lower by the negative momentum. This reaction occurred in spite of Nvidia's solid performance, pointing to a deeper concern among investors: growing skepticism about the sustainability of massive AI infrastructure investments. Market participants are increasingly questioning whether the extraordinary capital expenditures directed toward AI will deliver justified long-term returns, a reassessment that is weighing on the sector as a whole.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Broadcom?
A Critical Test for Chipmakers
The immediate future for Broadcom and its competitors hinges on whether the current skepticism represents a short-term market correction or the beginning of a more fundamental sector re-rating. Forthcoming quarterly earnings reports and concrete investment signals from major cloud service providers are likely to provide crucial clarity on the trajectory of AI-driven demand.
The sector now faces a proving ground, with its recent highs being tested by a renewed focus on investment rationale and long-term profitability.
