Investors in SAP SE are bracing for a decisive two-week period that will test the resilience of the software giant's ambitious transformation. The stock, trading nearly 45% below its 52-week high of €271.60, faces a critical examination of its cloud growth engine and shareholder returns, starting with first-quarter results this week.

The immediate focus is Thursday, April 23. After market close, SAP will report Q1 2026 figures, with a consensus earnings per share estimate of €1.64. An analyst conference call featuring CEO Christian Klein and CFO Dominik Asam is scheduled for 11:00 PM CEST. The core metric under scrutiny will be the "Current Cloud Backlog," a key indicator of medium-term growth momentum. This follows a previously disappointing cloud outlook for 2025 that saw Siemens briefly overtake SAP as the most valuable DAX company.

Market observers are looking for signs that the company's strategic bets are gaining traction. SAP plans to shift its AI services to a consumption-based pricing model starting in July, a move Klein has heavily promoted. The success of this model, however, remains unproven. Broader economic concerns add pressure, as potential rising costs and trade policy uncertainty for SAP's manufacturing clients could lead to delays in capital-intensive ERP migration projects.

The stock's recent performance offers a mixed picture. Shares closed last Friday at €153.40, marking a weekly gain of about 2% and standing more than 10% above the 52-week low hit on April 10. Over the past seven sessions, the price advanced nearly 8%. Yet, year-to-date, the stock remains down approximately 25%. A recent breach above a short-term moving average is seen by chart watchers as a weak buy signal, but not necessarily indicative of a sustainable recovery.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?

Analyst sentiment is deeply divided, reflecting the uncertainty. Barclays analyst Sven Merkt maintains an Overweight rating with a €220 price target, arguing the current valuation already prices in significant downside risk and citing SAP's strong enterprise software market position. In stark contrast, J.P. Morgan recently slashed its target to €175 from €260 and downgraded the stock to Neutral, stating the thesis for accelerating revenue dynamics and significant margin expansion no longer holds. Piper Sandler also downgraded to Hold, citing challenges in AI adaptation.

Following the earnings release, the corporate calendar remains packed. On May 5, SAP will hold its virtual Annual General Meeting. Shareholders will vote on a proposed dividend of €2.50 per share for fiscal 2025, a 6.4% increase of 15 cents from the prior year. The ex-dividend date is May 6, with payment slated for May 8. The company has never cut its dividend since its 1988 IPO. The AGM agenda also includes the contract extension for HR board member Gina Vargiu-Breuer, a signal of continuity.

Running in the background is a massive share buyback program. Authorized for up to €10 billion, the program began in February 2026 and is scheduled to run through the end of 2027. For the full year 2026, SAP's targets call for cloud revenue between €25.8 and €26.2 billion, representing growth of 23% to 25%, with operating profit expected to rise to a range of €11.9 to €12.3 billion.

SAP at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The average analyst price target still implies theoretical upside of over 50% from current levels. Whether that potential is realistic will be determined by the narrative that emerges from Thursday's conference call and the subsequent shareholder vote, setting the tone for the remainder of the year.
