Santander Charts Ambitious Growth Path Following Record Profits
30.03.2026 - 06:41:23 | boerse-global.deBuoyed by a record-breaking performance in 2025, Banco Santander is projecting confidence and outlining a bold strategic vision through 2028. The Spanish banking giant’s leadership, addressing shareholders at the recent annual meeting, not only reaffirmed current-year targets but also detailed an aggressive multi-year plan. This forward-looking strategy emphasizes international growth and technological advancement, even as broader market concerns over geopolitical tensions persist.
Strategic Acquisitions Drive International Ambitions
A core component of Santander's strategy involves targeted acquisitions in its key markets. The bank is moving to bolster its international footprint through the purchases of Webster Bank in the United States and TSB in the United Kingdom. Concurrently, it has divested its operations in Poland. This portfolio realignment is projected to contribute an additional annual profit exceeding $2 billion by 2028.
Technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), is identified as a major driver of future efficiency. Last year alone, AI applications delivered €280 million in value, primarily through enhanced credit assessments and fraud prevention systems. The bank aims to scale this annual AI contribution to over €1 billion by 2028. Management believes the institution's diversified geographical presence provides a buffer against regional economic volatility, including current tensions in the Middle East.

Shareholder Returns and Market Performance
The previous fiscal year represented a historic milestone for Santander, which posted a record net profit of €14.1 billion. Management plans to significantly increase returns to shareholders who backed this success. Initiatives include a 14% dividend hike and the advancement of a massive €10 billion share buyback program. The overarching objective is to more than double the cash dividend per share by 2028.
This corporate optimism, however, has yet to be fully mirrored in the equity markets. Santander shares recently closed at €9.31, trading substantially below their 52-week high of €11.15. Since the start of the year, the stock has declined by approximately 9%. Investors appear to be pricing in general geopolitical risks and their potential impact on energy prices, despite the company's robust fundamental results.
The 2028 Roadmap: Key Targets
Santander's executive team has established clear benchmarks for the coming years to solidify its market position:
- Annual profit exceeding €20 billion
- Return on Tangible Equity (RoTE) of greater than 20%
- Expansion of its customer base to over 210 million
- Annual AI-driven value contribution above €1 billion
The systematic integration of new technologies and the expansion of its client business form the foundation for this ambitious plan. Furthermore, Santander is increasingly positioning itself within the European defense sector financing landscape, a move the bank views as a necessary step given the current geopolitical climate.
