This colossal capital expenditure is squarely aimed at capturing a larger share of the lucrative market for artificial intelligence semiconductors.
Foundry and Memory: A Dual-Pronged Assault
A core component of the planned 110 trillion won investment is a major push into advanced contract manufacturing. Samsung is channeling massive resources to drastically enhance its production capacity for chips below five nanometers. This cutting-edge process technology is considered essential for securing long-term contracts with demanding cloud and AI sector clients and halting further market share erosion to TSMC.
Simultaneously, a significant portion of the funds is directed toward the mass production of the next-generation HBM4 memory. This technological focus is already yielding high-profile partnerships. Samsung has secured a deal to equip OpenAI's first in-house AI chip—internally codenamed "Titan"—with its HBM4 memory solutions.
The company is also deepening its collaboration with AMD.
