Ripple Shifts XRP Ecosystem Toward Decentralized Funding Model

Ripple moves away from centralized grants, launching a DAO and new programs to fund XRP ecosystem development and expand into DeFi and AI.

In a significant departure from its historical approach, Ripple has unveiled a new strategy for the development of the XRP Ledger. The company announced on Thursday that it is moving away from a centralized funding model, opting instead for a decentralized structure designed to broaden the ecosystem's foundation and reduce its reliance on direct grants from Ripple itself.

A Pivot from Centralized Control

This strategic realignment represents a clear turning point. Since 2017, Ripple has been the primary financial backer for the network, injecting more than $550 million into various initiatives. The new plan aims to distribute this responsibility more widely. The core objective is to provide developers with independent avenues for securing capital and technical support, thereby enhancing the overall maturity and resilience of the XRP ecosystem.

To facilitate this transition, the company is implementing three key initiatives:

• The FinTech Builder Program: This program will target startups building institutional financial applications, with a specific focus on stablecoins, tokenization, and credit infrastructure.
• The XAO DAO: A new hybrid Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) will be established to grant the community direct governance power. Members will gain the ability to vote on resource allocation and submit their own proposals for ecosystem development.
• Regional Hubs: Ripple plans to create local hubs, such as "XRP Asia," and bolster independent organizations to provide more targeted support for developers globally.

Expanding Beyond Payments

The strategy seeks to reposition the XRP Ledger as a platform for cross-sector innovation. While the network has been predominantly associated with cross-border payments, the new focus will actively incorporate areas like Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). A critical measure of success for this evolution will be increased participation from external venture capital firms, which can connect project founders with broader capital markets.

Market reaction to the structural news was initially muted. The price of XRP currently stands at $1.35, having declined approximately 5.7% on Friday.

Although the immediate price movement is secondary, the fundamental goal of these measures is to bolster long-term stability and decentralization. The ultimate success of the strategy will be gauged by tangible metrics, specifically whether on-chain activity and the number of real-world applications built on the ledger see significant growth.
