Despite posting record financial results and enjoying positive analyst sentiment, shares in German defense specialist Renk Group continue to face downward pressure, creating a puzzling scenario for investors.

The stock closed last Friday down nearly five percent at €51.99. This decline was particularly notable given the day's ostensibly positive backdrop for defense stocks, which included a sector study from Barclays and increased attention from the market debut of industry newcomer Vincorion. Early session gains ultimately evaporated, continuing a recent pattern within the sector.

Analyst Consensus Points to Significant Upside

The market's current valuation stands in stark contrast to the view from research desks. Fourteen analysts collectively peg the fair value of Renk shares at €68.46, implying a potential upside of approximately 32 percent from current levels. Major institutions including J.P. Morgan, Berenberg, Deutsche Bank, and Warburg Research predominantly recommend buying the stock, with price targets ranging from €63 to €76. This supportive analyst outlook is further bolstered by the political climate, notably Germany's planned 2026 defense budget of around €108 billion.

Record Figures Fail to Impress the Market

The core of the investor dilemma traces back to the company's recent annual report. For the 2025 fiscal year, Renk delivered genuine milestones: revenue of €1.37 billion, an order backlog at an all-time high of €6.68 billion, and a 38 percent dividend increase. Paradoxically, the share price fell roughly nine percent on the day these results were released. Market experts attributed the sell-off to the company's 2026 outlook and a weaker free cash flow projection, suggesting investors penalized the conservative forward guidance more than they rewarded the past performance.

Management forecasts for 2026 include revenue exceeding €1.5 billion and an adjusted EBIT between €255 million and €285 million. While these figures appear solid, they were apparently insufficient to rally the share price toward its 52-week high of €88.73—a level from which the stock now trades about 41 percent below.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk?

Strategic Growth Levers and Long-Term Ambitions

Renk's strategy is built on two key pillars: capitalizing on Europe's defense spending surge and expanding its international footprint. A significant part of this plan is a $150 million investment program in Michigan, USA, running through 2030. This commitment includes $70 million for tangible assets and $80 million for research and development. CEO Alexander Sagel, alongside Governor Gretchen Whitmer, announced plans to create up to 270 new jobs. The company already employs over 700 people across four U.S. states.

Looking further ahead, the group is targeting organic revenue of €2.8 to €3.2 billion by 2030, with the potential for an additional €1 billion from acquisitions. Over this period, the defense segment is expected to grow to around 90 percent of total sales.

The Central Tension Remains

The fundamental disconnect between the company's operational strength and its share price performance continues to be the central theme. As long as the market assigns greater weight to conservative future guidance than to the record order book, the stock may struggle to find firm footing above its 200-day moving average of €62.64.
