The world's leading battery manufacturer, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), has posted staggering annual profit growth. However, this impressive financial achievement is being clouded by significant operational challenges in Europe, where a regulatory issue at its new Hungarian facility highlights the complexities of its international expansion.

Environmental Scrutiny in Hungary

Authorities in Hungary's Hajdú-Bihar county confirmed an environmental protection procedure against CATL on Tuesday. The action was triggered by the unauthorized storage of chemical materials at the company's still-unfinished battery plant in Debrecen. Officials have provisionally banned the use of the affected building.

This development presents a stark contrast to the company's formidable financial results. CATL's latest annual report for 2025 reveals a net profit surge of 42% to 72.2 billion yuan. Revenue climbed in parallel, increasing by 17% to 423.7 billion yuan. The sales volume for lithium-ion batteries saw substantial growth, advancing 39% to 661 gigawatt-hours.

Market Resilience Amid Operational Headwinds

Despite the operational setback in Europe, CATL's equity has shown resilience in the market, buoyed by its underlying financial strength. The stock closed at 405.00 CNY on Tuesday, trading a comfortable 12% above its 50-day moving average.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying CATL?

Competitors Secure Key North American Contracts

As CATL navigates regulatory compliance in Europe, its main rivals are securing major contracts in North America. LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI announced billion-dollar supply agreements for energy storage systems (ESS) in the United States at the start of the week. LG, for instance, will supply Tesla from a facility in Michigan starting in 2027. Concurrently, Samsung SDI booked a large order worth $1.05 billion from Indiana. These deals underscore a strategic pivot by competitors to target the rapidly expanding energy storage market.

The ongoing environmental review in Debrecen now serves as a critical test for CATL's international manufacturing strategy. A swift resolution of the compliance issues is essential to prevent further delays to its European expansion timeline, especially as Asian peers aggressively develop their foothold in the U.S. market.
