OHB SE reports record backlog and strategic wins, but its share price is held back by a pending antitrust review of a major €8-10B German defense satellite contract.

While the Bremen-based aerospace group OHB SE is currently delivering a series of operational triumphs, its share price momentum is being held back. A pending regulatory review is delaying what could become the single largest contract in the company's history, creating a disconnect between its strong fundamentals and market performance.

Record Backlog and Strategic Wins

The company's operational strength is evident across its European subsidiaries. In late March, OHB's Italian division successfully deployed eight additional Eaglet-II satellites via a SpaceX launch vehicle, bringing its planned Earth observation constellation to 16 units. Separately, OHB Sweden secured a landmark €248 million contract for the Sterna program, marking the largest satellite order ever placed within Sweden's space sector.

These successes are rapidly filling the order books. For the past fiscal year, OHB reported a record order backlog of €3.19 billion. The group's total output also saw a significant increase, rising by 21% to reach €1.25 billion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

Antitrust Review Delays Major Defense Contract

Despite this robust operational backdrop, investor sentiment is being tempered by an ongoing proceeding at Germany's Federal Cartel Office (Bundeskartellamt) in Bonn. The authority is examining a proposed joint venture between OHB and Rheinmetall Digital. The focus of the venture is the highly secure SATCOMBw Stage 4 communications network for the German Bundeswehr.

This massive defense project, with an estimated total value between €8 and €10 billion, would see OHB responsible for satellite construction. Analysts at NuWays estimate the Bremen firm's potential share at approximately €3 billion and have reaffirmed their price target of €272.00 for the stock. However, recent speculation about a delayed clearance from the competition authority has noticeably dampened share price movement.

Management Raises Mid-Term Targets

Undeterred by the regulatory hurdle, OHB's management recently revised its medium-term objectives upward. Driven by rising defense budgets across Europe, the company now aims to surpass the €2 billion revenue threshold from 8 onwards.

Investors will gain their next detailed insight into the business trajectory on May 7, when OHB releases its first-quarter figures. A positive decision from the Cartel Office prior to this date would clear the path for the national defense consortium to proceed, fundamentally underpinning the group's growth strategy with a new, substantial foundation.
