Sonoro Gold has entered a pivotal phase in its development, with market attention now firmly fixed on a single, critical regulatory milestone. The company recently published an updated Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) for its Cerro Caliche project in Mexico, providing a clear economic blueprint. The transition from explorer to developer hinges on securing the final permit, marking a significant shift in focus for the company and its investors.

Project Economics Paint a Robust Picture

The late-February PEA outlines a highly profitable operation for the planned gold mine in Sonora. Using a base-case gold price assumption of $3,500 per ounce, the study calculates a post-tax net present value of $224 million. The project boasts a compelling internal rate of return (IRR) of 50% over a planned mine life of ten years. Initial processing is slated for 12,000 tonnes per day, with a planned expansion to 16,000 tonnes per day at a later stage.

The Final Hurdle and Financing Path

Despite these strong figures, the path to production requires two parallel achievements. Management has identified the grant of the Environmental Impact Authorization (MIA, Manifestación de Impacto Ambiental) as the last major regulatory step before construction can commence. This approval from Mexico's environmental agency, SEMARNAT, is now the central focus and is viewed by the market as the primary catalyst for the stock.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Sonoro Gold?

Concurrently, Sonoro Gold must secure funding for the estimated initial capital expenditure of $83 million. Following the completion of a smaller financing round in December 2025, the company is now evaluating larger financing solutions or potential strategic partnerships to meet this requirement.

Market Sentiment and Share Performance

Investor patience is being tested during this waiting period. The stock recently reflected this cautious sentiment, declining by over seven percent this past Friday to close at €0.14 per share. This price action has widened the gap to its 52-week high of €0.20, recorded in January, to approximately 30 percent.

Significant Upside Beyond the Current Plan

Long-term potential is underscored by a recent expansion of the project area to nearly 4,000 hectares, which substantially increases the exploration upside. Notably, the current economic study incorporates only about 30% of the identified mineralized zones, leaving considerable scope for future resource expansion and mine life extension.

The coming months will be defined by ongoing dialogue with SEMARNAT. A positive decision on the MIA is considered the decisive trigger for the project's next phase. Successfully structuring the project financing remains the essential prerequisite for Sonoro Gold to complete its evolution into an active gold producer.
