Puma Shares Demonstrate Unexpected Resilience Amid Sector Turbulence
04.04.2026 - 05:44:29 | boerse-global.deWhile a weak outlook from U.S. rival Nike has dragged down the broader sporting goods sector, Puma is displaying remarkable fortitude. The Herzogenaurach-based company, though deep in its own operational losses, is being buoyed in the market by a separate set of developments. The entry of a major new shareholder and an aggressive Asia strategy are currently overshadowing its business challenges, insulating the stock from the industry-wide anxiety.
Fundamental Pressures Persist
The underlying financial situation remains tense. For the concluded 2025 fiscal year, Puma registered an operating loss of 357.2 million euros alongside declining revenues. Looking ahead to 2026, CEO Arthur Hoeld anticipates a deficit of up to 150 million euros. A significant burden stems from new U.S. tariffs on key manufacturing countries, including Vietnam and China. Management projects a negative impact of approximately 80 million euros from these duties and has already filed a lawsuit in a U.S. federal court to reclaim the payments.
New Anchor Shareholder Provides Stability
A key factor supporting the equity is a major shift in ownership structure. Chinese competitor Anta Sports is acquiring roughly 29 percent of Puma's shares from the Pinault family for 1.51 billion euros. Although Anta has ruled out a full takeover for now, this new shareholder base is providing tangible support for the stock. In a complementary strategic move, Puma is shifting its technological focus toward Asia. The company is establishing a new research laboratory for running shoe technology in Suzhou through a partnership with Shincell New Materials. This local anchoring in the Asian market appears to be convincing investors more than the current balance sheet.

Upcoming Spring Milestones
The market will gauge the success of Puma's restructuring path against concrete data in the coming weeks. Key dates for investors include:
- 30 April 2026: First-quarter results presentation.
- 19 May 2026: Annual General Meeting, featuring a vote on the proposed dividend waiver.
The Q1 figures at the end of April will offer the first genuine evidence of whether the Asian offensive can financially cushion the persistent weakness in Western markets and the substantial tariff burdens.
Despite these considerable headwinds, Puma's stock settled at 22.02 euros on Friday, recording only a moderate decline of 1.65 percent since the start of the year. One operational bright spot that helps justify this price stability is the faster-than-expected reduction of inventory levels, which is projected to reach a normalized state by year-end.
