Plug Power's Reddit Gamble Amid a Hydrogen Sector at a Crossroads

Plug Power CEO holds Reddit AMA amid turnaround push, while Bloom Energy soars on a $2.65B AI data center deal. Analysis of the diverging hydrogen sector.

The hydrogen sector is currently a tale of diverging fortunes, with Plug Power Inc. attempting a high-stakes public charm offensive. CEO José Luis Crespo will face retail investors in an uncensored Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session on April 16, a move highlighting the company's urgent need to build confidence as it navigates a critical turnaround phase.

This public test comes as the broader industry sees starkly different trajectories. Bloom Energy has surged to a $39.4 billion market capitalization, fueled by a landmark $2.65 billion deal with American Electric Power (AEP) to supply up to 1 GW of fuel cell capacity for powering AI data centers. For 2026, Bloom forecasts revenue between $3.1 and $3.3 billion, representing growth of approximately 58%. Plug Power, by contrast, holds a market value of just $3.8 billion. Its stock, trading around €2.32, has gained about 150% over the past twelve months but remains roughly 34% below its 52-week high.

Operationally, Plug Power is showing nascent signs of progress. The company reported its first-ever positive gross margin of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025. Full-year 2025 revenue reached approximately $710 million, with Q4 contributing $225.2 million. Management has laid out a clear roadmap targeting positive EBITDA by 2026, operating profit by 2027, and full profitability in 2028.

To fund this journey, liquidity is paramount. A key element is the sale of its Project Gateway site to Stream Data Centers for a minimum of $132.5 million. This transaction is part of a broader asset monetization program designed to generate over $275 million in total liquidity, which the company believes is sufficient to finance operations through 2026. Furthermore, around 80% of its projected 2026 revenue is already under contract.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

The company is aggressively pitching its hydrogen fuel cells as a solution for the booming AI data center market, which could see up to $7 trillion in investment by 2030. Plug Power plans to offer up to 250 MW in a special auction by a major US grid operator and has a non-binding letter of intent with an unnamed US data center developer. It also recently secured a contract to supply a 275-MW GenEco electrolyzer for Hy2gen's Courant project in Canada.

Yet significant skepticism persists. Prominent critic Jim Cramer recently noted the company "should have been profitable a long time ago." Structural challenges include tariffs on Chinese components and European electrolyzers, the high cost of hydrogen for mass-market adoption, and substantial shareholder dilution—the total number of outstanding shares has ballooned by roughly 700% over the past decade. Short interest remains elevated at around 24% of the free float.

Analyst sentiment is cautious. Susquehanna recently raised its price target on Plug Power from $2.50 to $2.75 but maintained a "Hold" rating. The consensus twelve-month price target stands at $3.00. A legal shadow also lingers from a class-action lawsuit related to a Department of Energy loan dispute, which entered a new phase after a key deadline passed on April 3.

The upcoming Reddit AMA is more than a publicity stunt. Investors will demand concrete timelines for the asset sales needed to hit that $275 million liquidity target in the first half of the year. Crespo's performance could act as a significant sentiment catalyst for the stock.

Plug Power's story unfolds alongside other hydrogen players facing their own tests. Nel ASA, for instance, saw its 2025 revenue fall 31% to 963 million Norwegian kroner despite a 364% quarterly surge in order intake. Its stock languishes near €0.19. The company will release its first-quarter figures on April 22, a crucial test of its ability to convert a record order backlog of 1.319 billion NOK into revenue.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Meanwhile, SFC Energy stands out as a profitable niche player, reporting an adjusted EBITDA of €16.7 million on €143.3 million in revenue for 2025. In contrast, SunHydrogen remains a highly speculative micro-cap, with less than $1 million in revenue and a focus on industrializing its laboratory-scale technology.

For Plug Power, the path forward hinges on executing its financial plan and convincing the market that its AI data center narrative is viable. The Reddit forum on April 16 offers a direct, unfiltered channel to a key investor base. Whether it builds new confidence or deepens existing doubts will set the tone for the company's challenging climb toward profitability.
