Plug Power's new chief executive, Jose Luis Crespo, is taking an unconventional route to connect with shareholders. Today, he will host a two-hour live "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit, directly fielding questions from retail investors from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. The move comes just weeks after he assumed the CEO role on March 2, 2026, and represents a high-stakes effort to build confidence in the company's intricate turnaround plan.

That plan is beginning to show tangible, albeit mixed, results. For the first time in years, Plug Power reported a positive gross margin of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025, a dramatic reversal from a disastrous negative 122.5% margin in the prior-year period. The stock has surged 210% over the past twelve months, trading recently at 2.50 euros, well above its 200-day moving average of 1.89 euros. Since the start of the year, the share price has climbed roughly 30%.

Operational milestones are adding substance to the financial narrative. In Germany, the company recently achieved a significant technical feat within the H2CAST project, successfully injecting nearly 80 tons of hydrogen into massive underground salt caverns for storage. The gas was supplied in two phases—44.5 tons between April and August 2025, followed by a further 35 tons—using hydrogen produced by the Hy2Gen ATLANTIS electrolyzer in Werlte. This demonstration of managing the full value chain from production to large-scale storage marks a shift from pilot projects to commercial infrastructure.

Simultaneously, the company's project backlog is expanding. In early April 2026, Plug Power secured a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the Hy2gen "Courant" project in Québec, Canada. The deal involves supplying a 275-megawatt electrolyzer system to produce decarbonized ammonium nitrate for the mining industry using hydropower.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Despite these advances, significant challenges persist. The company's full-year 2025 results revealed revenues of $710 million alongside a substantial net loss of $1.63 billion. Furthermore, the share count has ballooned by approximately 50% over the past twelve months and by about 700% over the last decade, highlighting ongoing dilution. To shore up its balance sheet, management plans to sell assets worth $275 million in the first half of 2026, including the Gateway project for at least $132.5 million.

External headwinds are also mounting. The company faces 20% tariffs on Chinese components for its fuel cell business and on electrolyzer imports into Europe. While Plug Power is working to shift to domestic suppliers, these tariffs remain a near-term cost pressure. Analyst sentiment reflects this caution; the average price target from Susquehanna, Jefferies, and Wells Fargo sits at $2.18, roughly 25% below recent trading levels.

Today's Reddit forum will serve as a critical litmus test for Crespo's leadership. Investors are likely to press for details on capital requirements, the realism of the "Project Quantum Leap" cost-saving program, and the true value of the firm's claimed $8 billion electrolyzer backlog. The company targets a positive adjusted EBITDA by Q4 2026, operational profitability by 2027, and full profitability by 2028, with about 80% of its expected 2026 revenue already secured.

Plug Power at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Crespo's direct engagement offers a chance to solidify the market's fragile optimism. Whether he can convincingly bridge the gap between promising projects and a path to sustainable earnings will be clear in the coming quarters.
