Plug Power's Path to Profitability Faces a Live Test

New CEO Jose Luis Crespo engages investors directly as Plug Power reports first positive gross margin in years, major hydrogen storage milestone, but faces significant losses and dilution.

Plug Power's new chief executive, Jose Luis Crespo, is taking an unconventional route to connect with shareholders. Today, he will host a two-hour live "Ask Me Anything" session on Reddit, directly fielding questions from retail investors from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET. Simultaneously, the company's project backlog is expanding. In early April 2026, Plug Power secured a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the Hy2gen "Courant" project in Québec, Canada. The deal involves supplying a 275-megawatt electrolyzer system to produce decarbonized ammonium nitrate for the mining industry using hydropower.

Despite these advances, significant challenges persist. The company's full-year 2025 results revealed revenues of $710 million alongside a substantial net loss of $1.63 billion. Furthermore, the share count has ballooned by approximately 50% over the past twelve months and by about 700% over the last decade, highlighting ongoing dilution. To shore up its balance sheet, management plans to sell assets worth $275 million in the first half of 2026, including the Gateway project for at least $132.5 million.

External headwinds are also mounting. The company faces 20% tariffs on Chinese components for its fuel cell business and on electrolyzer imports into Europe. While Plug Power is working to shift to domestic suppliers, these tariffs remain a near-term cost pressure. Investors are likely to press for details on capital requirements, the realism of the "Project Quantum Leap" cost-saving program, and the true value of the firm's claimed $8 billion electrolyzer backlog.
