Plug Power's Data Center Ambitions Face a Critical Earnings Test
17.04.2026 - 12:43:05 | boerse-global.deThe race to power the artificial intelligence boom is reshaping the energy landscape, and Plug Power is making a decisive pivot. The hydrogen specialist is aggressively targeting the data center market, positioning its fuel cells as a solution for the sector's surging electricity demand, which is projected to consume nearly 12% of U.S. power by 2030. This strategic shift comes as the company prepares to report first-quarter earnings in May 2026, a crucial test for its nascent financial recovery.
Under new CEO Jose Luis Crespo, the company is pursuing concrete steps to capture this opportunity. It plans to bid for 250 megawatts in a specialized grid auction and has already secured a letter of intent with a major data center developer. This refocus coincides with initial signs of operational improvement. Plug Power closed the 2025 fiscal year with revenue of $710 million, a 12.9% year-over-year increase that exceeded its own $700 million target. More notably, it achieved a positive gross margin of 2.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025.
To strengthen its balance sheet further, the company is unlocking liquidity through asset sales. A deal to sell its "Gateway" project and infrastructure to Stream Data Centers is expected to bring in at least $132.5 million. This transaction is part of a larger plan to free up over $275 million in the near term. Crespo has outlined a clear roadmap aiming for full profitability by 2028, with revenue targeted to surpass $1 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
However, the path forward is fraught with challenges. The company continues to navigate significant headwinds, including new 20% U.S. tariffs on European electrolyzers and Chinese fuel cell components. Competition is also intensifying, with alternative technologies like small modular reactors securing firm contracts in the same data center space Plug Power is targeting. Analyst sentiment remains cautious; the consensus among 30 ratings is a "Hold" with an average price target of $3.64, though more recent assessments from Susquehanna, Jefferies, and Wells Fargo average just $2.18.
Crespo has adopted an unconventional communication strategy, engaging directly with retail investors in a Reddit "Ask Me Anything" session shortly after taking the helm. While the stock traded between $2.78 and $2.97 that day, it remains highly volatile within a 52-week range of $0.69 to $4.58. The company also faces legal pressure from a shareholder class action alleging misrepresentation of the prospects for a major U.S. Department of Energy loan. This skepticism is reflected in a persistent short interest, with roughly 24% of the free float currently sold short.
Despite these hurdles, Plug Power continues to secure project work, having recently won the front-end engineering design contract for a 275 MW electrolyzer system from Hy2gen in early April. Management expresses confidence in pushing its gross margin to breakeven by year-end. The upcoming Q1 report will be pivotal in demonstrating whether the margin improvement is sustainable and if the strategic pivot to data centers is translating into tangible progress toward its goal of a positive operating result by 2027.
