A new partnership with design platform Canva aims to inject growth into PayPal’s core business at a critical moment. The integration, announced ahead of a showcase at the Canva Create event in Los Angeles on April 16, allows the platform’s 265 million users to embed payment links or QR codes directly into their designs. This enables freelancers and small businesses to accept payments via PayPal, Venmo, or PayPal Pay Later without needing a separate website, targeting the fast-growing social commerce sector projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2028.

This strategic push comes as the company’s foundational branded checkout business shows significant strain. Growth in that segment slowed sharply to just one percent in the fourth quarter of 2025, down from six percent a year earlier. For 2026, management has guided for only weak single-digit growth, with transaction margins expected to stagnate at best.

Concurrently, the company faces a consequential deadline. Shareholders who held PayPal stock between February 2025 and February 2026 have until April 20, 2026, to step forward as a lead plaintiff in a securities class action lawsuit. The litigation alleges management made misleading statements regarding 2027 growth targets and the performance of the branded checkout segment. This legal pressure compounds the stock’s poor performance; shares have fallen roughly 18% since the start of the year and currently trade around €40.45, significantly below the 200-day moving average of €51.52.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying PayPal?

April 20 also marks a major corporate restructuring, as PayPal spins off its cryptocurrency services into a new subsidiary, PayPal Digital, Inc. User accounts will transition automatically. This move follows the broader rollout of the company’s dollar-denominated stablecoin, PYUSD, across 70 markets in March 2026.

The Canva deal is part of a broader distribution offensive. Recent initiatives include launching Venmo’s first global peer-to-peer service in 90 countries and integrating PayPal as a fiat on- and off-ramp for crypto exchange Bybit EU under the MiCA regulatory framework.

Investors are looking for signs these new channels can offset core weakness. Some support for the stock price comes from a substantial capital return program, with the company projecting $6 billion each in share buybacks and free cash flow for 2026. The true test, however, arrives in May with the release of first-quarter 2026 results. Analysts will scrutinize whether the new partnerships are beginning to materially improve checkout growth metrics, a key requirement for rebuilding investor confidence.
