Orsted's North American Operations Gain Momentum as Key Projects Advance

Orsted's US wind farms hit key milestones, reducing execution risk. Regulatory hurdles ease as projects near completion, strengthening the company's transatlantic growth strategy.

The Danish energy group Orsted is demonstrating significant progress with its offshore wind developments in the United States, mitigating a longstanding area of concern for investors. Operational milestones recently achieved at two major sites along the Eastern Seaboard are substantially lowering execution risks for the company's entire North American portfolio, which had previously been viewed as vulnerable to regulatory delays.

US Regulatory Clouds Partially Clear

A notable easing of the regulatory environment has accompanied these physical advancements. The US Department of Justice allowed a key objection period for the continued construction of the Revolution Wind project to expire, a move interpreted by the market as a positive signal. The next critical legal deadline falls on April 3, when the final objection window for the Sunrise Wind site closes. Given that these two US ventures together account for approximately 15% of Orsted's anticipated operational earnings (EBITDA), their smooth progression is being seen as a crucial indicator of stability.

Project Milestones Signal Operational Strength

The Revolution Wind project, which will supply power to New England, is now more than 93% complete. After overcoming legal hurdles in late 2025, the final turbine installations and commissioning activities are proceeding at a rapid pace. The facility has already been feeding electricity into the regional grid since mid-March.

Meanwhile, installation of the first of 84 turbines has commenced at the Sunrise Wind development off the coast of New York. This 924-megawatt park is pioneering the use of a modern high-voltage direct current transmission system for a US offshore wind project and is scheduled to deliver its first power before the end of this year.

European Ambitions Fueled by Strong Finances

Concurrently, Orsted is accelerating its European operations. Work on the massive 2.9-gigawatt Hornsea 3 wind farm in UK waters begins this month with the installation of foundations. Specialized installation vessels have already departed from ports in the Netherlands and the UK to position the initial batch of 197 monopiles.

The company is financially well-positioned to support this global expansion drive. A recently completed divestment program bolstered its coffers with roughly 46 billion Danish kroner. This reinforced capital base is intended to secure participation in upcoming offshore auctions and fund growth objectives extending beyond 2030.

Market analysts view the converging positive developments—tangible construction progress and a calmer regulatory outlook in the US—as key factors reducing the perceived risk profile of Orsted's ambitious transatlantic strategy.
