The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded a significant new contract to OHB SE in the growing field of planetary defense. The company's Italian subsidiary, OHB Italia, is tasked with constructing the RAMSES spacecraft, designed for a close-up study of the asteroid Apophis. The contract's value, approximately €81 million, and its demanding development timeline are both critical aspects of the project.

A Race Against Time to Study Apophis

The core objective of the RAMSES mission is to conduct a detailed survey of the asteroid Apophis before its close flyby of Earth in April 2029. This goal dictates an exceptionally tight schedule. To achieve a launch window in early 2028, the spacecraft must be designed, built, and ready for flight within just three and a half years.

To manage this accelerated timeline and mitigate technical risk, OHB plans to utilize a proven spacecraft platform: the same base used for the ESA's "Hera" mission. This strategic reuse of existing technology is expected to streamline development and facilitate the rapid deployment required.

Strategic Positioning in Civil and Defense Sectors

This contract reinforces OHB's position as a key technological player in civil spaceflight, particularly within the increasingly prominent and politically relevant domain of asteroid defense research.

Concurrently, market attention is focused on a separate, potentially larger opportunity in the defense sector. OHB, in a consortium with Rheinmetall, is bidding for the German Bundeswehr's major SATCOMBw Stufe 4 project. A successful bid could see OHB taking responsibility for satellite manufacturing.
