The eyes of the aerospace world are on the Pacific Ocean this Friday evening, but for Bremen-based space and technology group OHB SE, the stakes extend far beyond a historic splashdown. As NASA’s Artemis II mission concludes with the return of its Orion capsule, the company’s technology faces a ultimate test, while a regulatory review on a multi-billion euro defense project creates significant headwinds back on Earth.

Operationally, the company’s foundations appear rock-solid. For the full year 2025, OHB boosted its total output by 21 percent to €1.25 billion, posting an adjusted operating result of €84 million. The firm order backlog reached a record high of €3.19 billion, providing a robust foundation for its medium-term growth targets. Management, having raised its forecasts at a Capital Market Day in January, aims for annual contract intake of around €3 billion and is targeting total output of €1.4 billion for the current year.

However, a major defense initiative is currently applying the brakes. Germany’s Federal Cartel Office is reviewing a planned joint venture between OHB and Rheinmetall Digital for the highly secure Bundeswehr communications network, SATCOMBw Stage 4. In this project, estimated to be worth between €8 and €10 billion, OHB would be responsible for satellite construction. Analysts at NuWays estimate OHB’s potential revenue share from the venture at €2.7 to €3.3 billion. The uncertainty surrounding the exact project timeline and regulatory approval has weighed on investor sentiment, pushing the share price down by more than nine percent at times.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

Tonight’s events in space carry immense weight for future business. The Orion capsule’s re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere at over 38,000 km/h represents a fiery trial for the mission’s hardware. OHB subsidiary MT Aerospace supplied critical structural components for the SLS heavy-lift rocket, including dome segments for its cryogenic hydrogen tank. Following notable heat shield damage observed during the preceding unmanned mission, NASA adjusted the flight path for today’s return. A flawless recovery of the astronauts serves as an essential reference for OHB to successfully position itself in future contract rounds with the US space agency, strengthening its hand for upcoming international projects.

The next concrete data point for the market arrives in a few weeks. On May 7, 2026, the group will present its first-quarter results, offering evidence on whether the targeted annual output of €1.4 billion remains on track. For now, the company navigates a pivotal moment where a demonstration of technological prowess in orbit intersects with a critical regulatory process on the ground.
