Nestlé shareholders face a week of significant financial and strategic tests, bookended by a dividend payment and crucial first-quarter sales data. The Swiss food giant, while maintaining its 66-year record of steady or increasing payouts, is navigating a complex restructuring that includes a high-stakes auction for its water brands and the operational debut of its new chief executive.

The company’s annual general meeting in Lausanne on April 16 formalized a dividend of CHF 3.10 per share, a five-centime increase from the prior year. With the stock closing at CHF 79.02, this translates to a yield of approximately 3.9%. The ex-dividend date of Monday, April 20, is expected to pressure the share price at the week's open. This consistent return has long been a key attraction for income-focused investors, even as the stock has struggled, declining roughly 6.6% since the start of the year and trading well below its 50-day moving average of CHF 85.53.

Adding a notable voice to its governance, Nestlé welcomed Thomas Jordan, the recently departed president of the Swiss National Bank, to its board of directors. Market observers interpret this appointment as a signal of a conservative, stability-focused financial policy, aligning with a company in the midst of a prolonged strategic repositioning.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nestle?

All eyes now turn to Thursday, April 23, when CEO Philipp Navratil presents his first quarterly sales figures. The results arrive under a cloud, as a massive recall of infant nutrition products—affecting over 800 items across 60 countries—has already carved a CHF 200 million hole into the first-quarter accounts. This single event is expected to weigh on the full-year organic growth forecast by approximately 20 basis points. While the official target range of 3% to 4% organic growth remains, incorporating the recall’s impact, further uncertainties could push results toward the lower end. Barclays analysts maintain an "Equal Weight" rating with a price target of CHF 86.00, forecasting Q1 organic growth of 2.5%, slightly below the market consensus of 2.6%.

Simultaneously, a major portfolio transformation is underway behind the scenes. A heavyweight private equity battle is heating up for Nestlé’s water business, which includes brands like Perrier, S.Pellegrino, and Acqua Panna. Firms including CD&R, KKR, and PAI have advanced to the next bidding round, with Platinum Equity also expressing interest. The portfolio is valued at around €5 billion. Nestlé has stated it began the engagement process with potential partners in the first quarter of 2026, aiming for a full deconsolidation of the business by 2027.

Beyond immediate operational and strategic moves, a persistent structural risk looms. The company’s lucrative Nespresso segment, which generates about a quarter of its global revenue from the U.S. market alone, remains vulnerable. Its capsules are produced exclusively in western Switzerland, making them directly susceptible to potential U.S. tariffs of 39%, which are currently suspended for 90 days. This contrasts with 95% of Nestlé’s other U.S. products, which are manufactured locally. The market is banking on Swiss negotiators finding a resolution before the suspension lifts.
