The WisdomTree Silver 3x Daily Leveraged exchange-traded commodity (ETC) is currently exhibiting extraordinary price swings, placing it in a volatility bracket that rivals even digital assets like Bitcoin. According to strategists at UBS, the fund's forward volatility is projected between 70% and 80%, underscoring the intense market forces at play.

Recent trading activity highlights this turbulence. On March 6, the leveraged silver ETC, listed on the London exchange, posted a single-day gain exceeding 10%. This surge was propelled by a significant rally in the underlying metal, with the silver spot price itself climbing approximately 2.51% to $84.33 per troy ounce. The fund's triple multiplier mechanism amplified this move for its GBP share class. Over recent months, the realized volatility of the precious metal has hovered near a staggering 100%.

This environment creates substantial challenges due to the product's daily reset mechanism. Designed to track three times the daily performance of the Solactive Silver Commodity Futures SL Index (after accounting for interest income and a total expense ratio of 0.99%), the constant leverage rebalancing can lead to structural decay in choppy markets. A so-called "restrike event" was triggered on January 30 when price movements breached a predefined 20% threshold. Investors face pronounced compounding effects, which can erode value over multiple trading sessions even if the underlying index eventually returns to its starting point.

Geopolitical Winds and Macro Forecasts

The macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape is a primary driver of this volatility. UBS strategists Dominic Schnider and Wayne Gordon, in a March 7 assessment, pointed to the ongoing tensions in the US-Israel-Iran conflict as a pressure point for the entire commodities sector. Silver briefly approached the $100 mark earlier this year during a period of escalation.

Looking ahead, UBS forecasts a peak near $100 per ounce by mid-2026, followed by a retreat to around $85 by March 2027. The bank views the risk-reward profile for the coming twelve months as less compelling. A structural price floor is anticipated from a persistent global supply deficit, which analysts estimate at roughly 300 million ounces.
