Microsoft is accelerating its journey toward artificial intelligence independence, unveiling three proprietary AI models within a single week. This aggressive push signals the tech giant's intent to build a competitive suite of its own offerings, even as its landmark partnership with OpenAI continues. The move positions Microsoft to contend directly with rivals like Google and Amazon in the foundational model arena.

Financial Performance and Investment Strain

This model offensive unfolds against a challenging backdrop for Microsoft's stock. Since the start of the year, the company's shares have declined by approximately 20%, making it the weakest performer among the so-called "Magnificent Seven" group of tech stocks. The equity currently trades nearly 30% below its all-time high.

These share price pressures exist despite robust operational figures. In its second fiscal quarter, Microsoft reported a 17% increase in revenue, reaching $81.3 billion. Its Azure cloud segment saw even stronger growth, expanding by 39%. Commercial remaining performance obligation—a key indicator of future revenue—surged by 110% to $625 billion.

The core challenge lies on the cost side. Capital expenditures in the same quarter jumped by 66% to $37.5 billion. This substantial investment outlay contributed to a contraction in free cash flow, which fell to $5.9 billion, marking a significant decrease from the preceding quarter.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

Introducing the MAI Model Family

The newly launched models form the cornerstone of Microsoft's proprietary AI strategy. Developed by the MAI Superintelligence Team under Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, the trio is designed for diverse applications.

The flagship offering, MAI-Transcribe-1, is a speech recognition model capable of transcribing in 25 languages. Microsoft claims it operates 2.5 times faster than its previous Azure Fast service. It is joined by MAI-Voice-1 for voice generation and MAI-Image-2, an image model already being integrated into Bing and PowerPoint. MAI-Image-2 currently ranks among the top three models on the Arena.ai leaderboard.

In comments to Bloomberg, Suleyman outlined an ambitious roadmap, targeting state-of-the-art performance in text, image, and audio by 2027. This goal is underpinned by a major expansion of computing capacity utilizing Nvidia's GB200 chips, a project slated for completion within the next 12 to 18 months.

Product Evolution and the Upcoming Earnings Test

On the product front, Microsoft is preparing two significant changes. A new enterprise license tier, Microsoft 365 E7—internally referred to as the "Frontier Suite"—will become available on May 1, 2026, priced at $99 per user per month. This marks the first new enterprise license level since the introduction of E5 in 2015. Subsequently, on July 1, 2026, comprehensive price adjustments across all Microsoft 365 plan tiers will take effect.

The next critical test for investor sentiment arrives with the quarterly earnings report scheduled for April 29, 2026. Company management has provided revenue guidance for the third fiscal quarter in a range of $80.65 billion to $81.75 billion, representing year-over-year growth of roughly 16%. With three new AI models now in the market and the E7 launch on the horizon, this report will be closely watched for signs that Microsoft's substantial AI investments are beginning to restore confidence among shareholders.
