Microsoft is moving forward alone with the expansion of a massive AI data center project in Abilene, Texas. OpenAI, which had initially been a partner in the development, has withdrawn from the expansion plans and is shifting its additional capacity elsewhere. For Microsoft, this development is less of a setback and more of a strategic opportunity. The company has swiftly secured the newly available space to bolster its Azure infrastructure and sovereign AI capabilities.

Record Quarterly Decline and Investor Skepticism

The company's shares are currently trading at their lowest point in 52 weeks, having lost approximately 23% of their value in the first quarter of 2026. This marks the steepest quarterly decline since 2008. Market confidence in Microsoft's technology remains, but doubts are growing over the return on investment. The central question for investors is when the multi-billion dollar investments in AI infrastructure will begin to yield tangible financial results.

This pressure comes amid soaring capital expenditures. For the 2026 fiscal year, spending is projected to reach around $146 billion—a 66% increase from the $88 billion reported the previous year. Investor reaction to these figures has been cautious, particularly as the growth rate of the Azure cloud segment has recently shown a slight deceleration for the first time in years.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

The Stargate Project and Evolving Independence

The data center in question is part of the so-called "Stargate" complex, originally conceived as a joint infrastructure venture between Microsoft and OpenAI. Developer Crusoe has already completed two buildings, with six more slated for completion by the end of 2026. Despite Microsoft's significant 27% stake in OpenAI, the takeover of the Texas project underscores a trend of both companies increasingly managing their compute capacity independently.

Product Advancements and the "Agentic AI" Vision

On the product front, Microsoft continues to push forward with enhancements. New performance tiers for SQL Hyperscale, featuring up to 192 vCores, are being optimized specifically for AI workloads. Furthermore, GPU utilization within the Azure Kubernetes Service can now be monitored in real time, a move that provides enterprise clients with greater transparency over their Nvidia GPU resources.

Looking to the medium term, Microsoft is placing a strategic bet on what analysts term "Agentic AI"—autonomous AI agents capable of handling complex workflows independently. Features like "Work IQ" and the integration of GPT-5.2 into the Copilot ecosystem are central pillars of this strategy. The company's commercial remaining performance obligation (CRPO), which recently climbed to $625 billion, offers at least solid visibility into future revenue streams. Nevertheless, the market continues to scrutinize the short-term profitability of this costly infrastructure offensive.
