Facing significant competitive pressure in the artificial intelligence space, Microsoft has initiated a major executive reshuffle aimed at accelerating the adoption of its Copilot AI assistant. Despite billions in investment, user numbers for Copilot continue to trail far behind offerings from rivals Google and OpenAI, prompting a strategic separation of product development from foundational research.

Competitive Pressures Mount

The urgency behind this reorganization is underscored by stark user statistics. In the enterprise segment, Microsoft currently reports approximately 15 million M365 Copilot licenses. This figure, however, represents only a fraction of the potential within its vast ecosystem, which includes over 450 million commercial users.

The gap is even more pronounced in the consumer market. Microsoft's Copilot attracts around 150 million monthly active users. By comparison, Google's Gemini assistant is accessed by 750 million people. OpenAI's ChatGPT maintains a dominant position with a staggering 900 million weekly users. This struggle for market traction is reflected in the company's stock performance; shares closed yesterday at 336.00 euros, marking a decline of nearly 17 percent since the start of the year.

A New Leadership Structure to Drive Focus

At the core of the shake-up is a clear division of responsibilities designed to streamline execution. Jacob Andreou, a former Snap executive, has been appointed Executive Vice President with oversight of the entire Copilot business for both consumer and commercial customers. In this role, he will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella.

Conversely, Mustafa Suleyman, previously a central leader in the AI division, is stepping back from direct product management. His focus will shift entirely to pioneering advanced research in superintelligence and frontier AI models. This bifurcation is intended to speed up the delivery of market-ready products while simultaneously building the next-generation technological foundation for autonomous systems.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Microsoft?

Advancing In-House AI Capabilities

Alongside the organizational changes, Microsoft is aggressively developing its proprietary AI technology. The company recently unveiled MAI-Image-2, a new text-to-image model that will be progressively integrated into Copilot and the Bing search engine. This model already ranks third in industry benchmarks and represents a significant technological leap over its predecessor from October 2025.

This internal development push serves a long-term strategic goal: reducing a substantial dependency on partner OpenAI. Financial commitments to the creators of ChatGPT currently account for roughly 45 percent of Microsoft's remaining performance obligations. By consolidating product teams under Andreou's leadership, the company aims to end the fragmentation of its own AI services and rapidly improve customer adoption rates.
