A single company now accounts for over half of all positive earnings revisions in the S&P 500. According to Goldman Sachs, Micron Technology is responsible for a staggering 51% of all EPS estimate upgrades in the index since the start of the US-Iran conflict, highlighting the market's extraordinary reliance on the memory chip giant. This outsized influence is driven by an insatiable demand for artificial intelligence hardware.

The financial projections are breathtaking. The consensus expects Micron's earnings per share to surge by 605% by 2026. Analysts at Goldman Sachs, who recently raised their own forecasts, now sit about 19% above the broader market consensus. In stark contrast, the median S&P 500 stock has recorded no positive earnings revisions over the same period. Together with Exxon Mobil, Micron represents more than 60% of all upward revisions in the benchmark index.

The company's recent quarterly results illustrate this explosive growth. For its second fiscal quarter of 2026, Micron reported revenue of $23.86 billion, a 196% year-over-year increase. Its non-GAAP gross margin reached 74.9%. Management's guidance for the current quarter is even more robust, forecasting sales of $33.5 billion with a gross margin of approximately 81%.

At the core of this performance is High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), a critical component for AI servers. Micron's entire HBM production capacity for the remainder of 2026 is already sold out, with contracts that customers cannot cancel. This provides exceptional visibility. The company recently solidified its position by securing a supply agreement with OpenAI for HBM4 chips, with deliveries scheduled for the second half of 2026. Management confirms that HBM4 production for that year is fully booked, yet the company can only meet 50% to 66% of medium-term customer demand with its current capacity.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Micron?

This supply-demand imbalance is reshaping the entire industry. Reports from Nikkei suggest the global memory chip shortage could persist until 2027. While competitors like Samsung and SK Hynix are expanding, most new fabrication plants won't reach full capacity until 2027 or 2028 at the earliest. The scarcity is translating directly into higher prices, with DRAM contract prices for Q2 2026 expected to be up to 63% higher, while NAND flash prices could jump by 75%.

Micron is using this environment to fundamentally alter its business model. Historically reliant on the volatile spot market, the company is now pivoting toward long-term supply agreements with major cloud providers. This value-based pricing strategy is designed to smooth out the historical boom-and-bust cycles of the memory market. Shareholders are already benefiting; the company paid an increased quarterly dividend of $0.15 per share in mid-April, implying an annualized payout of $0.60.

Despite the powerful fundamental story, some caution flags are emerging. The stock, which recently traded at EUR 373, has soared roughly 507% from its 52-week low and sits about 7% below its annual high. BTIG's chief market technician, Jonathan Krinsky, notes the share price is trading more than 100% above its 200-day moving average, a level historically associated with near-term pullback risks. Additional uncertainty stems from new US export controls on wafer fabrication equipment to China, which pressure the supply chain. Company insiders have also sold shares worth approximately $45 million over the past three months, a volume institutional investors are watching closely.

Micron at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The central question for Micron is execution. Its ability to bring announced capacity expansions online faster than its rivals will determine whether the current explosive growth and unprecedented market influence can be sustained. For now, with sold-out production and a transformed business model, the company sits at the very center of the AI investment thesis.
