Metaplanet's Billion-Dollar Bitcoin Bet: A High-Stakes Play for US Capital

Japanese firm Metaplanet waives US ADR fees to attract investors despite a $1.45B unrealized Bitcoin loss. It continues aggressive BTC buying, now holding 40,177 coins as Japan's new crypto law provides clarity.

The Japanese firm Metaplanet is making a bold push to attract American investors, even as its massive Bitcoin treasury sits deep in the red. In a strategic move to boost liquidity, the company has waived fees on its US depositary receipts (ADRs) for 60 days, until June 12, 2026. This fee waiver of up to $0.05 per ADR is designed to encourage a shift from its Japan-traded F-shares to the smoother US DTC system.

This capital markets offensive coincides with a significant paper loss on its core asset. According to a KuCoin institutional analysis dated April 11, 2026, Metaplanet holds one of the most pressured corporate Bitcoin treasuries globally. The company's average purchase price sits at approximately $107,607 per Bitcoin, far above current market levels. This has resulted in an estimated unrealized loss of $1.45 billion, representing a 38.5% decline on its total holdings.

Despite this financial pressure, the company's expansion continues unabated. In the first quarter of 2026 alone, Metaplanet purchased 5,075 Bitcoin for about $398 million. These recent acquisitions were made at a more favorable weighted average price between $78,000 and $79,898 per coin. The firm ended Q1 2026 with a total of 40,177 BTC, valued at nearly $3.92 billion, cementing its position as the world's third-largest corporate Bitcoin holder.

CEO Simon Gerovich remains committed to an aggressive strategy known as the "555 Million Plan," which aims to amass 100,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2026. The company is financing this quest through new share and warrant issuances, which could potentially raise an additional 44.46 billion JPY.

The recent regulatory landscape in Japan provides a tailwind for this ambitious digital asset strategy. Over the weekend, the Japanese government approved an amendment to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, officially classifying cryptocurrencies as financial products. This grants Metaplanet, which transformed from a hotel developer into a Bitcoin heavyweight, the legal clarity it has sought for its treasury operations.

Trading activity in Tokyo showed some positive short-term signals. On Friday, April 10, Metaplanet's stock price rose 3.58% to 318.00 JPY, with trading volume climbing to around 16 million shares. The BOTSI-Advisor subsequently improved the stock's ranking from 499 to 440 within a technology-oriented stock universe on April 11. While long-term moving averages still indicate a sell signal, short-term technical indicators have brightened.

A secondary revenue stream offers a partial buffer. Metaplanet's Bitcoin income business, primarily driven by options strategies, generated approximately 2.97 billion JPY in revenue during the first quarter. However, this sum falls far short of offsetting the substantial paper losses from the cryptocurrency's price decline. The company's management expects the temporary ADR fee waiver to have no material impact on its balance sheet but hopes it will enhance global liquidity and valuation as it pursues its costly, high-stakes Bitcoin accumulation goal.
