Mercedes-Benz is introducing a groundbreaking technological advancement to its flagship EQS electric vehicle, marking a first for series production in the German automotive industry. The company is implementing a steer-by-wire system, which eliminates the traditional mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the wheels, replacing it entirely with electronic signals for control.

Strategic Investments Amid Market Challenges

This technological push comes during a demanding period for the automotive market. In early April, Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Adam Chamberlain highlighted economic headwinds, pointing to elevated credit interest rates and broader uncertainties that could potentially dampen consumer demand.

Despite this challenging environment, the automaker remains committed to its strategic growth objectives. The company has outlined plans to channel approximately $4 billion into its Alabama production facility by 2030. This investment is tied to an ambitious target of boosting U.S. sales by 28 percent. A significant portion, over 75 percent, of these capital expenditures will be directed toward the most profitable market segments. The EQS serves as a symbolic representation of this focused positioning within the electric luxury vehicle sector.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Mercedes-Benz?

Financially, Mercedes-Benz anticipates its group result for the full year 2026 to be in line with the previous year's performance. However, a notable increase in EBIT is expected compared to the prior year, which was impacted by restructuring costs.

Capabilities and Competitive Landscape of the New System

The core benefit of the new steer-by-wire technology lies in its ability to provide variable steering ratios. This feature integrates seamlessly with the rear-axle steering already present in the EQS. The system is paired with a steering yoke instead of a conventional round wheel, which enhances legroom and improves the driver's view of the dashboard screen—an advantage that becomes particularly relevant for Level 3 automated driving functions.

Currently, similar technology is only available in vehicles like the Tesla Cybertruck and the Lexus RZ, placing the EQS at the forefront of this innovation among German automakers.

To ensure utmost reliability and safety, Mercedes-Benz has engineered the system with dual redundancy. This includes two independent sets of sensors and actuators, a backup data supply, and a secondary power source. The manufacturer has validated the system's readiness for series production through an extensive testing regimen exceeding one million miles, conducted both on test rigs and under real-world driving conditions.
