This downward movement points to more than just temporary market weakness; it underscores a fundamental strategic shift underway at the Stuttgart-based automaker as it restructures its crucial Chinese operations.

Product Offensive and Financial Metrics

On the product front, Mercedes-Benz is preparing a counteroffensive. The company is pinning hopes on new electric vehicles, specifically the electric CLA, to recapture lost market share in the premium segment. Production of this model in China is scheduled for autumn 2025. Market analysts are watching this move closely. Bernstein currently rates the stock as "Market-Perform," while DZ Bank recently revised its price target downward, citing intensifying competitive pressures.

The company's valuation appears relatively modest at present. Based on an estimated earnings per share of €5.85 for 2026, the price-to-earnings ratio sits in the single digits. A central question for the remainder of the year will be whether the margin boost from these new electric models can materialize quickly enough to offset mounting cost pressures in China.

Restructuring and Partnership Dynamics

Concurrently, Mercedes-Benz has initiated a comprehensive restructuring within China. The automaker aims to reduce personnel expenses in sales and auto financing by 25% by 2027. As an initial step, it is cutting up to 15% of the relevant positions. The Chinese market, once the undisputed growth engine for the global auto industry, has transformed into a stress test for premium manufacturers.

Meanwhile, the cooperative relationship with major shareholder Geely is gaining renewed prominence. Industry sources report plans for closer coordination in research and development. To date, operational collaboration has been confined to the Smart joint venture and powertrain development, with concrete platform-sharing agreements yet to be finalized. The speed and depth of this partnership's evolution are viewed as a key strategic lever.

The overarching challenge for Mercedes-Benz is clear: executing a rapid and successful product transition while simultaneously streamlining its cost structure in its most important market.
